Article Synopsis
  • This study introduces a unique lower eyelid blepharoplasty technique that allows for separate excision and redraping of the skin and orbicularis oculi muscle, which is different from conventional methods.
  • A small group of patients underwent the procedure, which included creating a skin flap and excising some muscle fibers, with additional steps to address orbital fat prolapse if needed.
  • Results showed no significant complications, and both surgeons and patients rated the postoperative outcomes as satisfactory, highlighting benefits such as preserved muscle function and targeted tension during the redraping process.

Background: To provide new and to summarize published data on endolacrimal surgery with Piffaretti's trephines, in particular in patients having patent lacrimal drainage system (syringing) and epiphora resistant to medical treatments.

Patients And Methods: From two tertiary referral centers (Basel/Switzerland; Belo Horizonte/Brazil), 126 patients undergoing endolacrimal surgery with Piffaretti's trephines, combined, when clinically indicated, with other procedures known to improve epiphora (canthoplasty/pexie and/or conjunctivochalasisplasty).

Results: I) A study (Basel) in 17 patients showed one-year after surgery marked epiphora symptoms' improvement in 88% (15/17) of patients, 65% (11/17) being symptom-free.

Background: Intraocular pressure (IOP) remains the only treatable risk factor of progressive glaucoma. Recently a device became available to continuously record IOP fluctuation in contrast to classical, discreet IOP measurements.

Objectives: To perform 24-h IOP fluctuation monitoring using a CE-marked silicone lens-embedded strain gauge sensor (SENSIMED Triggerfish) in five normal tension glaucoma patients in the presence and absence of anti-glaucomatous treatment and to show the clinical importance of this diagnostic tool.

Purpose: The goal of this study is to show the efficacy and safety of an innovative surgical procedure regarding the treatment of open-angle and juvenile glaucoma known as sclerothalamotomy ab interno (STT ab interno).

Patients And Methods: Between February and July 2002 surgery was performed in 58 eyes of 58 consecutive patients, of which 53 were diagnosed with open-angle and 5 with juvenile glaucoma. The procedure was performed with the assistance of a custom-made high-frequency dissection probe (19 gauge with a tip of 0.

Background: The aim of this study was to assess the pathophysiological mechanisms leading to intraocular pressure (IOP) increase and to review the prevalence of glaucoma in thyroid eye disease (TED), an autoimmune reaction affecting extra-ocular muscles and intra-orbital content in thyrotoxicosis (Grave's disease, hyperthyroidism).

Material And Methods: We applied the modified Friedenswald's and Goldmann's equations to explain the mechanisms by which IOP increases in TED and gave a brief review of the literature.

Results: In TED, Friedenswald's equation explains the ultra-short term IOP increase observed when eyes deviate from their primary gaze position (eyeball compression by enlarged and infiltrated extra-ocular muscles).

Background: The purpose of this study is to report a surgical procedure that only uses anterior lamella structures (muscle and skin) to reconstruct large upper eyelid full-thickness total defects.

Patients And Methods: The study design is a non-comparative retrospective interventional small case series. Three patients with upper eyelid full-thickness (anterior and posterior lamellae) total-defect (horizontal extent: > 3/4 length, vertical extent: > 15 mm) after tumor excision (basal cell, squamous cell, or Merkel's cell carcinoma).

Background: Optical coherence tomography has become within the last years an established imaging technique with many applications in ophthalmology, and an important tool which contributes to earlier and more accurate diagnosis of glaucoma. As a consequence, detection sensitivity is highly valued. The aim of this study was to assess the reproducibility of peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness measurements by the Stratus Optical Coherence Tomograph (OCT) using the Fast- and Repeat-scan protocols in normal and glaucomatous eyes.

Background: The Ocular Response Analyser (ORA, Reichert Ophthalmic Instruments) is a non-contact applanation tonometer, providing two measures of intraocular pressure (IOP) - IOPg which represents a Goldmann equivalent IOP measure and IOPcc, representing a measure of IOP independent of corneal effects. In addition, the device provides two measures believed to represent corneal biomechanical properties: corneal hysteresis (CH) and corneal resistance factor (CRF). The aim of this study was to assess the repeatability of these measurements.

Low BP (blood pressure) is a recognized risk factor for some patients with NPG (normal pressure glaucoma). We have shown previously that patients with orthostasis have impaired circadian renal handling of sodium, which may contribute to the low BP. Therefore the aim of the present study was to examine the renal handling of sodium, the circadian variations in BP and the neurohormonal response to an orthostatic test in a selected subpopulation of 18 patients with NPG with vasospastic and orthostatic symptoms, and in 24 healthy control subjects.
