Background: Little is known about patterns of coexisting conditions and their influence on clinical care or outcomes in adults admitted to hospital for community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). We sought to evaluate how coexisting conditions cluster in this population to advance understanding of how multimorbidity affects CAP.
Methods: We studied 11 085 adults admitted to hospital with CAP at 7 hospitals in Ontario, Canada.
Objective: Patient data repositories often assemble medication data from multiple sources, necessitating standardization prior to analysis. We implemented and evaluated a medication standardization procedure for use with a wide range of pharmacy data inputs across all drug categories, which supports research queries at multiple levels of granularity.
Methods: The GEMINI-RxNorm system automates the use of multiple RxNorm tools in tandem with other datasets to identify drug concepts from pharmacy orders.
Objectives: To examine how the COVID-19 pandemic affected the demographic and clinical characteristics, in-hospital care, and outcomes of long-term care residents admitted to general medicine wards for non-COVID-19 reasons.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of long-term care residents admitted to general medicine wards, for reasons other than COVID-19, in four hospitals in Toronto, Ontario between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2020. We used an autoregressive linear model to estimate the change in monthly admission volumes during the pandemic period (March-December 2020) compared to the previous two years, adjusting for any secular trend.
Background: Admitting hospitalized patients to off-service wards ("bedspacing") is common and may affect quality of care and patient outcomes.
Objective: To compare in-hospital mortality, 30-day readmission to general internal medicine (GIM), and hospital length-of-stay among GIM patients admitted to GIM wards or bedspaced to off-service wards.
Design, Participants, And Measures: Retrospective cohort study including all emergency department admissions to GIM between 2015 and 2017 at six hospitals in Ontario, Canada.

Methods: We described all adults with COVID-19 or influenza discharged from inpatient medical services and medical-surgical intensive care units (ICUs) between Nov. 1, 2019, and June 30, 2020, at 7 hospitals in Toronto and Mississauga, Ontario.
Objective: Large clinical databases are increasingly used for research and quality improvement. We describe an approach to data quality assessment from the General Medicine Inpatient Initiative (GEMINI), which collects and standardizes administrative and clinical data from hospitals.

This study sought to determine the appropriateness of inpatient PICC use in general medicine at five academic hospitals in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, based on the Michigan Appropriateness Guide for Intravenous Catheters (MAGIC).
Methods: This was a retrospective, cross-sectional study of general internal medicine patients discharged between 1 April 2010 and 31 March 2015 who received a PICC during hospitalisation.

Background: The Hippo pathway plays a vital role in liver regeneration and development by determining cellular lineage and regulating cell proliferation and apoptosis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the nuclear expression of ARID1A in breast cancers by immunohistochemistry (IHC) and to correlate the findings to clinicopathologic variables including prognostic significance.
Methods: IHC was performed on tissue microarrays of 476 cases of breast cancer.
Purpose: The AT-rich interactive domain 1A (ARID1A) gene encodes BRG1-associated factor 250a, a component of the SWItch/Sucrose NonFermentable chromatin remodeling complex, which is considered a tumor suppressor in many tumors. We aimed to investigate the prognostic significance of ARID1A expression in gastric cancers and explore its relationship with clinicopathologic parameters such as mismatch repair protein expression.

Here, we describe a case of primary thymic adenocarcinoma in a 59-year-old woman. Histological examination of the tumor revealed tubular morphology with expression of cytokeratin 20 and caudal-type homeobox 2 according to immunohistochemistry, suggesting enteric features.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the TNIK, the active form of TNIK (p-TNIK), and β-catenin expression in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and to identify the prognostic significance of p-TNIK.
Methods: We assessed the expression status of TNIK, p-TNIK, and β-catenin by using immunohistochemical analysis of 302 HCCs in 8 tissue microarray blocks, and we evaluated their clinicopathologic features and survival rates based on their p-TNIK expression.
