Producers who sell milk to cooperatives or processors participating in FARM must follow program standards. The objectives of this study were to assess producer perceptions about the knowledge, experience, and value of FARM and to determine whether perceptions differ based on demographics.

Sample: Financial statements (ie, annual balance sheets and income statements for 3 consecutive years) were obtained from 45 practices.

Procedures: Ratio analysis of financial statements was performed with the DuPont Model, and practices were grouped into 4 financial performance groups on the basis of return on equity.

Thailand imported approximately4 million kilograms of pig products from Italy in 2015 during the same time as an ASF outbreak was occurring on the island of Sardinia in Italy, thereby posing a potential risk of introduction of ASF virus (ASFV) into Thailand. To estimate whether or not importing pig products from Italy is a risk for Thailand and to identify gaps in control and prevention measures, risk analysis was performed.

Background: There is an increasing push for dairy production to be scientifically grounded and ethically responsible in the oversight of animal health and well-being. Addressing underlying challenges affecting the quality and length of productive life necessitates novel assessment and accountability metrics. Human medical epidemiologists developed the Disability-Adjusted Life Year metric as a summary measure of health addressing the complementary nature of disease and death.

Estimating milk yield and value losses from increased somatic cell count on US dairy farms.

Milk loss due to increased somatic cell counts (SCC) results in economic losses for dairy producers. This research uses 10 mo of consecutive dairy herd improvement data from 2013 and 2014 to estimate milk yield loss using SCC as a proxy for clinical and subclinical mastitis. A fixed effects regression was used to examine factors that affected milk yield while controlling for herd-level management.

Dairy cow disability weights.

Over the past 175 years, data related to human disease and death have progressed to a summary measure of population health, the Disability-Adjusted Life Year (DALY). As dairies have intensified there has been no equivalent measure of the impact of disease on the productive life and well-being of animals. The development of a disease-adjusted metric requires a consistent set of disability weights that reflect the relative severity of important diseases.

Estimation of risk management effects on revenue and purchased feed costs on US dairy farms.

Variations in milk and feed prices directly affect dairy farm risk management decisions. This research used data from the 2010 US Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Resource Management Surveys phase III dairy survey to examine how risk management tools affected revenues and expenses across US dairy farms. The survey was sent to 26 states and collected information on costs and returns to individual dairy farms.

Awareness and pro-active adoption of surface water BMPs.

Beef cow operators were surveyed to determine the effect of cost-share awareness and farm management characteristics on the adoption of surface water best management practices (BMPs) in a state without defined BMPs. Results demonstrated that farm management characteristics determined nutrient management adoption, farm characteristics determined filter strip adoption, and human capital and farm characteristics played the largest role with streambank fencing adoption. Cost-share awareness was not found to increase the probability of adopting any BMPs and Extension education was found to positively and significantly increase the adoption of all three BMPs.

Citizen complaints and environmental regulation of Michigan livestock operations.

Citizen environmental complaints filed against agricultural producers in Michigan were examined to determine farm and community factors influencing citizen complaints and the subsequent response of the farmer. Secondary citizen environmental complaint data were obtained from the Michigan Department of Agriculture from 1998 to 2007 with 1,289 observations. Citizen complaints were grouped into 5 categories: odor, surface water, ground water, combination, and other complaints.
