Background: Current approach to clinically suspicious biopsy-naïve men consists performing prostate MRI, followed by combined systematic (TRUS-Bx) and MRI-Ultrasound fusion biopsy (MRI-TBx) in those with PIRADS score ≥ 3. Researchers have attempted to determine who benefits from each biopsy method, but the results do not support the safe use of one method alone. This study aims to determine the optimal approach in biopsy-naïve men, according to their PSA levels.

Background Sexual intercourse frequency (SIF) is widely known to be associated with fertility, but little is known about what predicts SIF among infertile couples trying to conceive. In this study, we examine the demographic and lifestyle risk factors associated with less frequent coitus among infertile couples. Methods This cross-sectional study examined infertile couples actively trying to conceive, selecting them from patients seeking fertility treatment.

Background: Early identification of gestational diabetes mellitus is essential for improving maternal and neonatal outcomes. While risk factors such as advanced maternal age, elevated pre-pregnancy body mass index, multiparity, and a history of gestational diabetes have been recognized, the role of serum biomarkers remains uncertain. This study explores the predictive value of early-pregnancy laboratory findings in conjunction with maternal demographic and clinical characteristics for gestational diabetes mellitus.

Article Synopsis
  • Gestational diabetes mellitus is common and affects maternal and neonatal health, making it important to find reliable biomarkers for prediction and diagnosis, particularly in patients with intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy.* -
  • A systematic search and meta-analysis of 15 studies revealed higher serum total bile acid levels in women with gestational diabetes compared to controls, especially when levels were measured earlier in pregnancy before diagnosis.* -
  • The analysis showed no significant difference in total bile acid levels after gestational diabetes was diagnosed, indicating that earlier measurements might be more predictive of the condition.*

Background: Chronic inflammation is associated with many inflammatory diseases. Specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs) are well known for their crucial role in promoting the resolution phase of inflammation and restoring tissue homeostasis. Resolvin D1 (RvD1) is an endogenous omega-3-derived lipid mediator with pro-resolving activity.

Article Synopsis
  • Fall-related injuries are a major global issue, particularly affecting low-income and middle-income countries where 80% of fatal falls occur, prompting a study on hip-fracture surgery timelines for individuals aged 50 and older in these regions.
  • The study analyzed data from 4,486 patients across 55 hospitals from various countries, focusing on the time from injury to surgery and identifying factors that contribute to delays in surgical treatment.
  • Findings revealed significant delays in surgical intervention for hip fractures, and multivariable analyses aimed to uncover risk factors linked to these delays to improve patient outcomes.

  • Digital Polymerase Chain Reaction (dPCR) is a highly efficient method for quantifying DNA and identifying copy number variants, particularly useful in non-invasive prenatal testing for conditions like trisomy 21, 18, and 13.
  • A systematic review analyzed 9 studies to assess dPCR's effectiveness, showing high pooled sensitivity (98%) and specificity (99%) for trisomy 21 when compared to traditional karyotyping.
  • The results indicate dPCR is a promising alternative to next-generation sequencing for prenatal testing, although more research is needed to confirm its effectiveness for trisomies 18 and 13.

Fetal hemolysis is caused by maternal antibodies that cross the placenta. Anti-M antibodies can rarely cause severe forms of alloimmunization in the fetus and newborn. We present a case of severe anti-M alloimmunization requiring a total of 8 intrauterine transfusions, in a patient with a prior poor obstetrical history.

Background: Optimal nutritional support is essential to the recovery and improved outcomes of burn patients. This review aims to explore existing literature to evaluate nutrition assessment tools, feeding formulations' caloric predictive ability, timing of initiation of feeding, optimal nutritional composition, and caloric intake in burn patients.

Methods: Three databases were searched to glean studies investigating nutrition in acute severe adult burn patient populations in four areas: outcomes based on feeding type and timing, the caloric predictability of nutritional assessment tools, outcomes associated with the composition of feeding formulas, and considerations related to caloric intake.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates antimicrobial resistance patterns and the prevalence of hospital-acquired infections (HAIs), specifically focusing on common bacteria involved and the challenges posed by drug-resistant strains.
  • Conducted over six months at Imam Khomeini Hospital in Ilam, Iran, the analysis included 123 patients and identified significant levels of multidrug-resistant isolates, particularly methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
  • Results indicated that respiratory infections were the most common type of HAI, especially in older patients, underlining the need for better antibiotic use and infection control to combat these healthcare issues.

Nowadays, it is well recognized that apoptosis, as a highly regulated cellular process, plays a crucial role in various biological processes, such as cell differentiation. Dysregulation of apoptosis is strongly implicated in the pathophysiology of numerous disorders, making it essential to comprehend its underlying mechanisms. One key factor that has garnered significant attention in the regulation of apoptotic pathways is HMG-CoA reductase degradation protein 1, also known as HRD1.

Background: The objective of this study was to induce the differentiation of human theca stem cells (hTSCs) into germ cell-like cells (hGCLCs) and assess their developmental progression following in vitro 3D culture with ovarian somatic cells within the follicle-like structures. To achieve this, the hTSCs were isolated from small antral follicles of three patients of varying ages and were then seeded in a differentiation medium for 40 days. The differentiated hGCLCs were subsequently aggregated with somatic ovarian cells (cumulus cells and hTSCs) in a ratio of 1:10 and cultured in a growth medium in a suspension culture dish.
