Background: While prior epidemiologic studies have suggested that injectable progestin-based contraceptive depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) use may increase a woman's risk of acquiring HIV, recent data have suggested that DMPA users may be at a similar risk for HIV acquisition as users of the copper intrauterine device and levonorgestrel implant. Use of the etonogestrel Implant (Eng-Implant) is increasing but there are currently no studies evaluating its effect on HIV acquisition risk.

Objective: Evaluate the potential effect of the Eng-Implant use on HIV acquisition risk by analyzing HIV target cells and cytokine profiles in the lower genital tract and blood of adult premenopausal HIV-negative women using the Eng-Implant.

The importance of fetal placental macrophages (Hofbauer cell [HCs]) is underscored by their appearance 18 d postconception and maintenance through term; however, how human HCs evolve during healthy pregnancy and how microenvironment and ontogeny impact phenotype and function remain unknown. In this study, we comprehensively classify human HCs ex vivo, interrogate phenotypic plasticity, and characterize antiviral immune responses through gestation. Activated HCs were abundant in early pregnancy and decreased by term; molecular signatures emphasize inflammatory phenotypes early in gestation.

Background: Liver transplantation (LT) has evolved to improve graft and patient survival. Early graft dysfunction (EGD) and primary nonfunction are an important cause of morbi-mortality. We had formulated the scientific hypothesis that the liver function can be evaluated by the indocyanine green (IG) after LT.

Background: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection remains an important cause of morbidity and mortality in allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplant (allo-HCT) recipients. CMV cell-mediated immunity (CMV-CMI) as determined by a peptide-based enzyme-linked immunospot (ELISPOT) CMV assay may identify patients at risk for clinically significant CMV infection (CS-CMVi).

Methods: The CS-CMVi was defined as CMV viremia and/or disease necessitating antiviral therapy.

Background: Integrating family planning interventions with HIV studies in developing countries has been shown to prevent mother-to-child HIV transmission and simultaneously reduce HIV and unintended pregnancy in high-risk populations. As part of a prospective cohort study on HIV incidence and risk factors in Zambian women having unprotected sex, we also offered family planning counseling and immediate access to long-acting reversible contraceptives. Although long-acting reversible contraceptives are the most effective form of contraception, many Zambian women are limited to oral or injectable methods because of a lack of knowledge or method availability.

Objective: To define physician´s behavior in the face of a mentally capable elderly dysphagic patients at risk of pulmonary aspiration, who do not accept oral restriction.

Methods: Observational, cross-sectional study, presenting a clinical case of an independent elderly with clinical complaints of dysphagia and laryngotracheal aspiration by flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing who rejected the proposal to restrict oral diet. A questionnaire about the patient's decision-making process was used to assess whether the physician was sympathetic and justify their answer, and if they are aware of hierarchy of ethical principles (recognition of the person´s value, autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence and justice), in the decision-making process, and which was the main principle that guided their decision.

Introduction: There is evidence that trauma caused by snoring in the pharynx could result in dysphagia in patients with obstructive sleep apnea, but the literature is still scarce to define the factors associated with the presence of dysphagia in these patients.

Objectives: To analyze the occurrence of dysphagia and its clinical and polysomnographic features in patients with moderate and severe obstructive sleep apnea, in addition to verifying the impact of dysphagia on the quality of life of these patients.

Methods: Seventy patients with moderate or severe apnea (apnea and hypopnea index - AHI>15/hour) were selected.

Background: The desire to space or prevent future pregnancies is high among postpartum women in Rwanda. However, the use of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC), especially the highly effective and cost-effective copper intrauterine device (IUD), is very low, whereas the rates of unintended pregnancy are high. This study aims to identify factors associated with pregnant women's and couple's interest in receiving a postpartum intrauterine device (PPIUD) within 6 weeks after delivery.

In recent studies, the interleukin (IL)-36 cytokines were shown to be elevated in women with non-Lactobacillus-dominated vaginal microbiomes. In this study, we evaluated IL36G expression in clinical samples from women with and without bacterial vaginosis (BV) and a human 3-dimensional cervical epithelial cell model. IL36G expression was significantly elevated in cervicovaginal epithelial cells isolated from BV-positive women and corresponded with increased neutrophil counts relative to BV-negative women.
