Article Synopsis
  • Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a genetic condition that affects tiny hair-like structures called cilia, making them not work properly.
  • Researchers studied cells from patients with PCD, their mothers, and healthy people to understand how these cells are different.
  • They found specific genes and proteins that were linked to problems in cilia movement, which could help develop new treatments for PCD in the future.

Objective: The aim of this study was to validate a small electronic electromyographic device (BiteStrip) designed to screen masseter electromyographic events that indicate sleep bruxism (SB) against traditional masseter electromyographic events (MEMG).

Study Design: Six SB treatment-seeking patients, 4 obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients and 8 symptom-free controls, underwent overnight polysomnography, including MEMG and BiteStrip recordings. Total BiteStrip and MEMG scores and indices (events per hour) based on total recording time (TRT) and total sleep time (TST) were computed.

Study Objectives: In light of the ongoing debate over the clinical significance of periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD) and its monitoring in overnight sleep studies, we introduce a novel, portable, low-cost device for PLMD testing. The KickStrip is a disposable device, which includes a movement sensor, a central processing unit with real-time software, and a display. In the present study, the KickStrip final score (Kscore) is validated against the traditional periodic limb movement index (PLMI) based on overnight recordings in the sleep laboratory.

Sleep apnoea svndrome (SAS) is a largely undiagnosed and prevalent disorder. It is associated with cardiovascular morbidity as well as excessive daytime sleepiness and poor quality of life. In the present study the SleepStrip, a novel screening device is introduced, which is low cost and easy to use and is aimed for widespread use.

Of 4,839 patients who visited the Emergency Room (ER) of a 650-bed general hospital (serving a regional population of 220,000) over a period of 28 consecutive days, 436 were suffering from gastrointestinal (GI) problems. The patients, together with their 140 ER doctors, were interviewed by 40 trained interviewers and information concerning demographic data, tests performed, diagnosis, treatment and hospitalization was collected and evaluated. Most of the GI patients (39.

Tangential missile wounds of the head without skull fracture are a known entity. Usually, references in the literature indicate that this type of injury results from a high-velocity missile impact. We present a case of a tangential missile head wound caused by a low-velocity missile.

A clear understanding of the significance of wound contamination as well as knowledge of the microbial flora that could be expected are needed in order to administer a rational and effective antibiotic treatment for open fractures. We have conducted a prospective study of the contaminating microbial flora in 89 open fractures. In addition, two more cultures were taken of all wounds not primarily closed.

Experimental pancreatitis induced by permanently closed duodenal loop results in death of the experimental animal. Acute pancreatitis can be induced in the rat by injection of taurocholate sodium-trypsin solution intraluminally into a temporarily occluded duodenal loop. Mortality in this model was 45% within one week after injection.

The clinical, biochemical and radiological findings in 16 patients with carcinoma of the head of the pancreas were compared with that of 13 with cholestatic jaundice due to chronic pancreatitis. Patients presenting with malignancy had more severe hyperbilirubinemia (18.5 +/- 2.

Percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography (PTC) with a "skinny" Chiba needle identified the biliary tree in 30 of 31 patients (97%) with extrahepatic obstructive cholestasis (EHC). The method was successful in only eight of 18 patients who had cirrhosis with unexplained jaundice. The biliary tree was visualized after one or two attempts in 23 of 31 patients with EHC (74%).

Factors influencing high school and university students' abilities to solve a conditional proposition were examined. Ninety-four male and female Ss were administered a directed or nondirected form of questioning for the selection task. The classic task involves presenting four cards (red, blue, 5, 7) with a conditional proposition rule "Every card with red on one side has 7 on the other" and the instructions to select the cards that would show the rule to be true or false.
