A Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) processes and converts brain signals to provide commands to output devices to carry out certain tasks. The main purpose of BCIs is to replace or restore the missing or damaged functions of disabled people, including in neuromuscular disorders like Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), cerebral palsy, stroke, or spinal cord injury. Hence, a BCI does not use neuromuscular output pathways; it bypasses traditional neuromuscular pathways by directly interpreting brain signals to command devices.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the impact of environmental factors on the mechanical properties of carbon-aramid hybrid composite materials, particularly focusing on moisture absorption and temperature effects.
  • It compares the low-velocity impact behavior of composites with and without a rubber core, testing them at energies of 25 J and 50 J, and evaluates differences between wet and dried specimens.
  • Key findings indicate that wet specimens without a rubber core absorbed 16% less impact energy than dried ones, while the wet specimens with a rubber core showed significant degradation, with a 53.26% reduction in absorbed impact energy after prolonged water exposure.

Kevlar and carbon fibres and fabrics have won a leading place in the structure market, although such materials are not cheap, and are increasingly used for reinforcing and strengthening structural elements in the civil engineering, automotive, aerospace and military industries, due to their superior mechanical properties, especially in terms of strength. The mechanical characteristics of such composite materials must be known in order to numerically simulate the mechanical behaviour of such structures in terms of the distribution of stresses and strains. It has also become a necessity to understand the effects of reinforcement with both types of fibres (carbon fibres and Kevlar fibres) on the mechanical properties, especially on the impact properties of such composites.

The purpose of prosthetic devices is to reproduce the angular-torque profile of a healthy human during locomotion. A lightweight and energy-efficient joint is capable of decreasing the peak actuator power and/or power consumption per gait cycle, while adequately meeting profile-matching constraints. The aim of this study was to highlight the dynamic characteristics of a bionic leg with electric actuators with rotational movement.

Flax fiber-reinforced plastics have an innate eco-friendly nature due to the fiber reinforcement and reduced energy requirements in fabrication when compared to current fiber reinforced composite materials. They possess a complex time-dependent material behavior, which is investigated in the present paper. A composite material with flax fiber reinforcement on the load direction, embedded in an epoxy resin matrix, was studied.

Manufacturing aircraft components through 3D printing has become a widespread concept with proven applicability for serial production of certain structural parts. The main objective of the research study is to determine whether a chlorinated polyethylene material reinforced with milled carbon fibers has the potential of replacing the current 5052 NIDA aluminum alloy core of the IAR330 helicopter tail rotor blade, under the form of a honeycomb structure with hexagonal cells. Achieving this purpose implied determining the tensile and compression mechanical properties of the material realized by fused deposition modeling.

Carbon fiber-reinforced composites represent a broadly utilized class of materials in aeronautical applications, due to their high-performance capability. The studied CFRP is manufactured from a 3K carbon biaxial fabric 0°/90° with high tensile resistance, reinforced with high-performance thermoset molding epoxy vinyl ester resin. The macroscale experimental characterization has constituted the subject of various studies, with the scope of assessing overall structural performance.

In this paper, we describe an actuator-based EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) virtual assistant system that can be used for the treatment of participants with traumatic memories. EMDR is a psychological therapy designed to treat emotional distress caused by a traumatic event from the past, most frequently in post-traumatic stress disorder treatment. We implemented a system based on video, tactile, and audio actuators which includes an artificial intelligence chatbot, making the system capable of acting autonomously.

As hybrid carbon-aramid composites become widely used in various industries, it has become imperative to mechanically characterize them using accurate methods of measuring the entire deformation field such as the digital image correlation (DIC) method. The accuracy of the numerical simulation of carbon-aramid composite structures depends on the accuracy of the elastic constants. Therefore, the goal of this research is to model and simulate the mechanical behaviour of the composite based on epoxy resin reinforced with carbon-aramid woven fabric by considering the mechanical properties investigated by tensile test combined with DIC and the bending test.
