Measurement of tracheal static pressure in exercising horses.

A nasotracheal catheter for measuring tracheal static pressure in exercising horses was designed according to aerodynamic engineering principles. Small ports near the end of the catheter transmitted pressure fluctuations to the recording apparatus. Accuracy was determined by the size, number, and location of pressure sensing holes on the catheter, and by the position of the catheter in the trachea.

Modulation of interferon signaling in human fibroblasts by phorbol esters.

Phorbol esters activate the expression of a variety of early-response genes through protein kinase C-dependent pathways. In addition, phorbol esters may promote cell growth by the inhibition of expression of cellular gene products regulated by antiproliferative agents such as interferons (IFN)s. In human diploid fibroblasts, phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) selectively inhibits the IFN-alpha-induced cellular gene ISG54.

Multiple criteria in sonographic diagnosis of prostatic carcinoma allows identification of all glands harboring clinically significant tumor: an in vitro study with histopathologic correlation.

Fresh whole prostate glands were examined systematically in a water bath to look for four sonographic criteria for prostatic carcinoma: well-circumscribed hypoechoic regions, external asymmetry of the gland, increase in anterior-posterior diameter ratio, and irregularity of the prostatic capsule. Whole mount sections were examined to correlate the histopathologic and sonographic findings. Using hypoechogenicity alone, 26 of 43 glands harboring tumor were identified correctly.

Long-term outcome of tooth repulsion in horses. A retrospective study of 61 cases.

The records of 61 horses undergoing tooth repulsion for treatment of alveolar periostitis were reviewed. Seventeen of 36 horses (47%) in which maxillary teeth were removed had serious postoperative complications, such as infection of a second tooth, bone sequestration, chronic sinusitis, draining tracts, retained dental packing, feed impaction of the alveolus or sinus, suture-line dehiscence, or skin-flap sloughs. Eight horses required at least one additional surgical procedure.

We retrospectively reviewed the findings in 655 consecutive young patients who underwent contrast-enhanced MR examinations (1.5T) of the head or spine. Their ages ranged from 4 months to 20 years (mean 10 years).

Metabolism of dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DS) in normal women and women with high DS concentrations.

In order to determine the contribution of serum dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DS) to estrone (E1) production in normal women and the effect of chronic elevation of the serum DS concentration on DS metabolism, four normal women and four women with high endogenous serum DS were infused with [3H]DS and [14C]E1 or [14C]testosterone for 6 h. Blood samples were analyzed for radioactivity as DS, dehydroepiandrosterone (D), androstenedione, testosterone, and dihydrotestosterone. Urine was collected for analysis of creatinine, 17-ketosteroids (17-KS), and radioactivity as estrone (E1).

Histopathological and ultrastructural changes in simulated large colonic torsion and reperfusion in ponies.

This investigation examines the histological and ultrastructural lesions of the colonic mucosa during terminal experimental infarction and subsequent reperfusion. Four ponies were anaesthetised and subjected to surgical torsion of the colon. Biopsies were collected at hourly intervals for 3 h, at which point the torsions were corrected.

Retention of calcium oxalate crystals in renal tubules.

Crystal retention within the renal tubules is essential for nephrolithiasis and the development of urinary stone disease. We studied the mechanisms involved in this process by inducing calcium oxalate crystal deposition within the rat renal tubules and examining them using various microscopic techniques. Crystals appeared to be retained either by attachment to the tubular epithelium or by aggregating with other crystals thus becoming large enough to be retained by their collective size.

Psychological disturbance and its associations in the children of the Gujarati community.

The infrequent referral of Asian children to child psychiatry clinics was noted. By administering Rutter's scale A2 to samples of Gujarati and English parents with children between the ages of 4 and 7 years a lower rate of disturbance was demonstrated among the Asian sample providing an explanation for the original observation. Family and child-rearing factors associated with disturbance were identified.

T, and dihydrotestosterone (DHT), and the blood was also analyzed for the concentration of nonisotopic DS by RIA.

Effect of magnesium on calcium oxalate urolithiasis.

Previous studies have shown that hypomagnesuria induced by magnesium deficient diet causes calcium oxalate crystal deposition in renal tubules of hyperoxaluric rats and administration of magnesium to these rats results in prevention of calcium oxalate crystallization in their kidneys. Based on these studies magnesium was claimed to be beneficial for calcium oxalate stone patients. However, hypomagnesuria is not a common phenomenon.

Videorecordings of the laryngeal activity of 108 unsedated horses were obtained at rest by passing a flexible videoendoscope into the nasopharynx through the right ventral meatus. All videotaped images were reviewed once, and 72 were reviewed twice, by three veterinarians. Laryngeal cartilage movement was assessed subjectively with a five-tier grading system.

Various agents have been implicated in inducing urothelial cancer. Renal tubular cell damage, resulting in membranuria, was induced by the administration of subcutaneous gentamicin to male Sprague-Dawley rats. One group of rats received gentamicin only, while a second group was given gentamicin plus ethylene glycol in drinking water at a concentration which increased urine oxalate but alone did not cause calcium oxalate crystalluria. Crystalluria occurred early in the combined treatment groups and persisted for the duration of the experiment.
