Thin and light vibrators that leverage the inverse piezoelectric effect with a diaphragm mechanism are promising vibrotactile actuators owing to their form factors and high temporal and frequency response. However, generating perceptually sufficient displacement in the low-frequency domain is challenging. This study presents a lever mechanism mounted on a diaphragm vibrator to enhance the vibrotactile intensity of low-frequency vibrotactile stimuli.

The importance of interpersonal touch for social well-being is widely recognized, and haptic technology offers a promising avenue for augmenting these interactions. We presented smart bracelets that use vibrotactile feedback to augment social interactions, such as handshakes, by transmitting vibrations between two people. This work conducts mechanical and perceptual experiments to investigate key factors affecting the delivery of interpersonal vibrotactile feedback via bracelets.

Can Facial Expressions Induce Haptic Perception?

A key challenge in haptics is designing human-human communications involving touch to facilitate positive effects on social interactions. An important consideration in designing social touch is understanding the effect of social stimuli on perception, in addition to that of a physical stimulus, because social touch always involves a partner. This study presents an experiment to demonstrate that facial expressions induce haptic perception.

Representing Interpersonal Touch Directions by Tactile Apparent Motion Using Smart Bracelets.

We present a novel haptic interaction to vibro-tactually connect an interpersonal touch using bracelet devices. A pair of bracelet devices identifies the user who is actively touching and the other who is passively touched, defining the direction as being from the former to the latter. By controlling the vibrational feedback, the pair induces a tactile apparent motion representing the direction between two hands.

SpiroSurface: A Repulsive and Attractive Force Display for Interactive Tabletops Using a Pneumatic System.

We present SpiroSurface, a novel force display for interactive tabletops. SpiroSurface uses a pneumatic system to generate both repulsive and attractive forces. We develop a prototype with 5x5 grid holes on the surface connected to an air compressor and vacuum tanks through electromagnetic valves.

Eye-to-eye contact and facial expressions are key communicators, yet there has been little done to evaluate the basic properties of face-to-face; mutual head orientation behaviors. This may be because there is no practical device available to measure the behavior. Life-threatening injury caused by complete impalement of a toothbrush: Case report.

Toothbrushes are the most common cause of foreign body injury to the oral cavity in children, but complete impalement by a toothbrush is an extremely rare occurrence and has not been reported previously. This report describes a 28-month-old girl who fell from a 1m ledge while brushing her teeth. Her toothbrush penetrated the oral cavity and could not be removed, and so she was rushed to the hospital with the toothbrush in place.

Vibration Feedback Latency Affects Material Perception During Rod Tapping Interactions.

We investigated the effect of vibration feedback latency on material perception during a tapping interaction using a rod device. When a user taps a surface, the perception of the material can be modulated by providing a decaying sinusoidal vibration at the moment of contact. To achieve this haptic material augmentation on a touchscreen, a system that can measure the approach velocity and provide vibration with low latency is required.

We purified and fractionated insulin-binding IgGs from cat sera by affinity chromatography and analyzed affinity of insulin-binding IgGs for insulin and their epitopes. Expression and purification of untagged full-length HCV NS5B RNA-dependent RNA polymerase.

[Efficacy of immunized milk for preventing viral infection].

This paper investigated the efficacy of passive protection provided by milk (immunized milk) against enterovirus infection in mice experimentally infected with enterovirus. Milk with a high antibody titer against six enterovirus serotypes was prepared from hyperimmunized goat. In vivo and in vitro experiments were performed and the results showed that immunized milk has an antiviral activity against enterovirus infection.

[Pharmacokinetic study of UFT in cancer patients receiving maintenance dialysis].

Six post-operative cancer patients receiving chronic dialysis (4 colorectal and 2 gastric cancer) were given daily UFT (300 mg/day tid). To determine the clearance of UFT with dialysis, the plasma concentration of tegafur, 5-FU and uracil were measured on the day with dialysis and without dialysis. The plasma concentrations of tegafur at 2 hours after oral administration of UFT showed no difference between the day with dialysis and without dialysis.

Functional and morphological effects of tumour necrosis factor alpha in an interleukin 6-producing pulmonary large cell carcinoma with sarcomatoid features.

We established a clonal cell line, HAT.MC8, derived from a human pulmonary large cell carcinoma with sarcomatoid features. This cell line was successfully maintained in a protein-free medium and exhibited sarcomatoid fibroblastic features in vitro.

Human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 protease protein expressed in Escherichia coli possesses aspartic proteinase activity.

We amplified the human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) protease gene fragment by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and cloned it into a pUC plasmid vector. DNA sequencing data of the protease gene fragment indicated that it contained an open reading frame capable of encoding the active HTLV-1 protease. To express a fusion protein of beta-galactosidase linked with the HTLV-1 protease in Escherichia coli, a plasmid DNA was constructed by inserting the HTLV-1 protease gene DNA into a procaryotic expression vector, pUEX2, consisting of a lacZ gene directed by a lambda phage Pr promoter and designated pUEX-pro.

Characterization of saccharide moiety in the electroplax sodium channel.

Carbohydrate chains on the large peptide of the voltage-sensitive sodium channel from Electrophorus electricus electroplax have been partially characterized by the lectin-blotting technique combined with digestion using three glucosidases: neuraminidase, endo-beta-N-acetylglucosaminidase H, and peptide: N-glycosidase F. The results show that both N-linked oligosaccharides and O-linked (mucin-type) oligosaccharides are present. In N-linked oligosaccharides, the results suggest the presence of complex- and hybrid-type oligosaccharides which contain bisecting N-acetylglucosamine(s), as well as the complex-type oligosaccharides with the alpha-Fuc-GlcNAc-(Asn) residue(s).
