Renal cell carcinoma extending into left side of double inferior vena cava.

A case of renal cell carcinoma extending into the left side of a double inferior vena cava is presented. En bloc excision of the left inferior vena cava and left kidney was performed without complications. Recognition of various venous anomalies, including double inferior vena cava, is important in the evaluation and surgical treatment of retroperitoneal disease.

Infrequent ras mutation in human stomach cancers.

Mutations of ras oncogenes in 37 human stomach cancers and 13 adenomas were investigated with regard to the histological phenotypes using polymerase chain reaction (PCR), allele-specific oligonucleotide hybridization and/or direct sequencing of the PCR products. The ras mutation was found only in one case (2.7%), the histology of which was poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma.

Allelic loss of chromosome 17p in urothelial cancer: strong association with invasive phenotype.

Allelic loss of chromosome 17p with a mutated p53 gene on the remaining allele has been observed in various kinds of human cancers. To examine the significance of allelic loss of chromosome 17p in human urothelial cancer with special attention to the clinicopathological features, 49 tumors with various stages and grades from 43 cases (35 bladder cancers and 8 renal pelvic or ureteral cancers) were examined for loss of heterozygosity using 5 polymorphic probes on chromosome 17p. Thirty-seven cases were informative, and allelic loss of chromosome 17p was observed in 15 (41%) of them.

Allelic losses at chromosome 17p in human renal cell carcinoma are inversely related to allelic losses at chromosome 3p.

Recent studies have demonstrated that allelic losses at chromosome 17p are associated with the genesis of a wide variety of human cancers. In order to assess whether the rearrangement of chromosome 17p was responsible for the genesis of renal cell carcinoma (RCC), we used restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of chromosome 17p. We studied 48 RCCs, including 6 metastatic RCCs, from 43 patients with 5 polymorphic probes to loci within or near the p53 gene.

Ectopic aberrant adrenals with epididymal abnormality.

We report a rare case of ectopic aberrant adrenals associated with epididymal abnormality found during exploration for a left undescended testis. Two ectopic adrenals were found, one on the epididymis and the other adjacent to the spermatic cord. We believe the simultaneous occurrence of epididymal abnormality and ectopic aberrant adrenals has not been reported before.

[CT-guided biopsy of paraaortic lesions: report of three cases].

Computed tomographic (CT)-guided biopsies of the lesions in paraaortic region were performed for three urologic disease conditions: retroperitoneal fibrosis, lymph node metastases of transitional cell carcinoma of renal pelvis and lymph node metastasis of renal cell carcinoma. The biopsies were performed without complications using the Bard Biopty biopsy gun with a Bard Biopty-Cut needle. Every biopsy specimen we obtained by the Biopty rendered an excellent biopsy core from which a definite histopathological diagnosis was made.

Endometriosis of bladder after menopause.

We report a rare case of endometriosis of the bladder in a 68-year-old postmenopausal woman. The patient had not received any exogenous estrogen therapy and the hormone levels were normal for a castrated female subject. Endometriosis of the bladder should be considered as a cause of an abnormal mass of the bladder even after menopause.

Leiomyoma of the scrotum: a case report and sonographic findings.

A rare case of leiomyoma of the scrotum is presented, and its ultrasonographic features are described. The ultrasound was of great help in the successful management by simple excision of the tumor.

[Indiana continent urinary reservoir: report of 15 cases].

Over the last several years, internal reservoir type urinary diversions have become popular. We have already performed Kock continent ileal reservoir for urinary diversion in more than 80 patients. The experience with the Kock pouch prompted us to try a new form of continent urinary reservoir originally reported by Indiana University group.

Total replacement of the suprarenal inferior vena cava with an expanded polytetrafluoroethylene tube graft in 2 patients with tumor thrombi from renal cell carcinoma.

Total replacement of the suprarenal inferior vena cava using an expanded polytetrafluoroethylene vascular graft was successful in 2 renal cell carcinoma patients with extended tumor thrombi densely adherent to the vena caval wall. Right radical nephrectomy in 1 patient and enucleation of the tumor in the solitary right kidney were performed concomitantly. Both patients are well without tumor recurrence and with good vena caval patency 14 and 6 months postoperatively.

[Experience with combination chemotherapy consisting of methotrexate, vinblastine, adriamycin and cisplatin (M-VAC) in advanced urothelial cancer].

The M-VAC (methotrexate, vinblastine, adriamycin and cisplatin) regimen was used to treat 6 patients with metastatic transitional cell carcinoma of the urothelial tract. Three patients showed a partial response, all of them were made surgically disease free. Two of them are still alive 1 year and for 6 months after surgery with no evidence of disease and one other died of disease 11 months after surgery.

[A case of paraureteral neurilemmoma causing ureteral obstruction: report of a case].

Retroperitoneal neurilemmomas are rare tumors. They are usually asymptomatic, and often become quite large before they are discovered. A case is reported of a 75-year-old man with complaints of general malaise and left lumbar pain.

Pulmonary nodules simulating metastasis of germ cell tumor after aggressive chemotherapy.

We describe a patient in whom pulmonary nodules developed without infectious symptoms during treatment with bleomycin, cis-platinum, vinblastine and etoposide combination chemotherapy for metastatic extra-gonadal germ cell tumor. At thoracotomy only fibrosis was found. In this case, false-positive elevation of alpha-fetoprotein and the CT scan appearance made us interpret the pulmonary nodules as new metastatic lesions.
