Dynamic high-resolution sonography compared to magnetic resonance imaging for diagnosis of temporomandibular joint disk displacement.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the value of dynamic high-resolution sonography for evaluation of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disk displacement compared to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with the mouth closed and during the maximal mandibular range of motion.

Methods: Dynamic high-resolution sonography with the mouth closed and during the maximal mandibular range of motion was performed on 39 consecutive patients (78 joints; 13 male and 26 female; age range, 18-77 years; mean age ± SD, 37.23 ± 16.

Triple-negative breast cancer: distinguishing between basal and nonbasal subtypes.

Purpose: Triple-negative (TN; estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, and HER-2 negative) cancer and basal-like breast cancer (BLBC) are associated with poor outcome and lack the benefit of targeted therapy. It is widely perceived that BLBC and TN tumors are synonymous and BLBC can be defined using a TN definition without the need for the expression of basal markers.

Experimental Design: We have used two well-defined cohorts of breast cancers with a large panel of biomarkers, BRCA1 mutation status, and follow-up data to compare the clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical features of TN tumors expressing one or more of the specific basal markers (CK5/6, CK17, CK14, and epidermal growth factor receptor; BLBC) with those TN tumors that express none of these markers (TN3BKE-).

Stand structure and spatial patterns of trees in mixed Hyrcanian Beech forest, Iran.

The mixed beach forests (Fagus orientalis) commonly dominate by shade tolerance species with irregular uneven age stand structure. The aim of this study was to analyze the stand structure and spatial pattern in order to identify specific structural patterns. Data was collected from a 16 ha permanent plot.

Pulmonary function studies in Kuwaiti children with sickle cell disease and elevated Hb F.

Conflicting ventilatory defects have been reported in children with sickle cell disease (SCD). In Kuwait, the disease is relatively mild with a low incidence of acute chest syndrome and other complications, presumably due to the Arab-Indian haplotype chromosomal background and elevated Hb F levels. There have been no previous studies of pulmonary function in patients with this haplotype.

Intestinal permeability is increased in bronchial asthma.

Background: Increased intestinal permeability has been reported in one study of adult asthmatics.

Aim: To determine whether children with asthma have altered intestinal permeability.

Methods: Thirty two asthmatic children, and 32 sex and age matched controls were recruited.

Multiple myeloma and chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia developing in a patient with autoimmune disease.

A 64-year-old lady with a personal and family history of autoimmune disease developed chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia and multiple myeloma simultaneously. Her sister died of acute myelomonocytic leukaemia, but showed no evidence of autoimmune disease. It is possible that chronic immunological stimulation, perhaps by an autoantigen, may predispose toward malignant transformation in both plasma cell and monocyte series.

Paraproteinaemia in relatives of patients with primary acquired agammaglobulinaemia.

Two instances of the unusual familial association of severe primary acquired hypogammaglobulinaemia and paraproteinaemia are described, and previous reports of familial immunoglobulin dyscrasias are discussed. Our observations lend further support to the possible existence of a genetic predisposition to these disorders.
