We have previously shown that neu oncogene-initiated rat mammary carcinomas uniquely over-express neu-related lipocalin (NRL), a member of the calycin protein superfamily. Here, we characterize the putative human homolog of NRL, neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL). ngal gene expression was found at moderate levels in only 2 of 17 human tissues examined, breast and lung.

Using genetic crosses between the carcinoma-resistant Copenhagen (COP) and carcinoma-sensitive Wistar-Furth rats, we have confirmed the identification of the Mcs1 locus that modulates tumor number. We have now also identified two additional loci, Mcs2 and Mcs3.

Chronic infections with trypanosomes dwelling extracellularly in the blood and tissues of their hosts are observed in all vertebrate classes. We present here a molecular phylogenetic reconstruction of trypanosome evolution based on nucleotide sequences of small subunit rRNA genes. The evolutionary tree suggests an ancient split into one branch containing all Salivarian trypanosomes and a branch containing all non-Salivarian lineages.

The tumors were screened for allelic imbalances by using polymerase chain reaction and 65 polymorphic microsatellite markers spanning the genome. No allelic imbalance was detected at the mapped location of MCS-1 on chromosome 2; however, a scan of the genome revealed random allelic imbalances in the radiation-induced tumors.

The consequences of dendritic geometry for the processing of synaptic information was analysed in two types of motion-sensitive neurones in the visual system of the fly. These neurones differ conspicuously in the morphology of their dendrites but receive their input from the same type of local motion-sensitive elements. Intracellular recording and activating selected regions of the dendrite by visual motion showed that, in accordance with cable theory of nerve cells, the way in which postsynaptic signals interact is essentially determined by the structure of the dendritic tree.

d-Limonene has efficacy in preclinical models of breast cancer, causing > 80% of carcinomas to regress with little host toxicity. We performed a pilot study on healthy human volunteers to identify plasma metabolites of limonene and to assess the toxicity of supradietary quantities of d-limonene. The monoterpene perillyl alcohol has been shown to induce the regression of 81% of small mammary carcinomas and up to 75% of advanced mammary carcinomas initiated by 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (DMBA) in the Wistar-Furth rat. Dietary perillyl alcohol was greater than 5 times more potent than the monoterpene limonene at inducing tumor regression. Perillyl alcohol is rapidly metabolized in the rat, as is limonene.

Although women bear the brunt of gonococcal infection-related morbidity, few large studies of gonorrhea treatment in women have been conducted. In a multicenter, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 181 evaluable women with uncomplicated gonorrhea were treated with ciprofloxacin (250 mg orally; 94 women) or ceftriaxone (250 mg intramuscularly; 87 women). Twenty-four percent of the participants were infected with antibiotic-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

The Copenhagen (Cop) rat carries a homozygous mammary carcinoma suppressor (MCS) gene that prevents both spontaneous and induced mammary cancer. Here we identify an additional rat strain, the Wistar-Kyoto (WKy), that is resistant to the development of mammary carcinomas. This rat strain is similar to Cop in having one homozygous copy of a mammary suppressor gene.

Carcinomas regress when limonene is added to the diet either when the tumor is small and still capable of spontaneously regressing or when it is large and progressed beyond the stage when it is susceptible to spontaneous regression. The limonene dose-tumor regression response relationship is steep.
