Antimicrobials are a core aspect of most livestock production systems, especially in low-and middle-income countries. They underpin the efficient use of scarce feed resources and stabilize returns on capital and labor inputs. Antimicrobial use (AMU) contributes to the production of healthy animals, yet AMU in livestock is linked to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in animals, humans and the environment.

Background: The evaluation of tools to accurately identify low birth weight (LBW) and/or premature newborns in resource-limited countries is a research priority. We explored the use of foot length, chest circumference, and mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) measured within 24 h as diagnostic tools for identifying newborns who are LBW, premature, or both; and compared measurements taken at birth with those taken at five days of age.

Materials And Methods: An observational study was undertaken in Hoa Binh Province General Hospital, Vietnam, in ethnic minority newborns.

Article Synopsis
  • PRRSV is a significant swine virus in Vietnam causing economic losses by reducing pig productivity, and this study analyzed 32 PRRSV isolates collected from 2008-2012.
  • The sequencing of the major envelope protein encoding gene (ORF5) revealed high genetic similarity among the isolates (94.8-100% nucleotide identity), particularly with North American and some Chinese strains.
  • Phylogenetic analysis classified the isolates into the North American genotype, specifically sub-lineage 8.7, which includes highly pathogenic strains, indicating the need for updated PRRS vaccine strategies in Vietnam.
