Recently, the bilayer nickelate LaNiO has been discovered as a new superconductor with transition temperature T near 80 K under high pressure. Despite extensive theoretical and experimental work to understand the nature of its superconductivity, the requirement of extreme pressure restricts the use of many experimental probes and limits its application potential. Here, we present signatures of superconductivity in LaNiO thin films at ambient pressure, facilitated by the application of epitaxial compressive strain.

Despite obvious similarities in their electronic and crystallographic structures, it remains unclear whether the interactions that shape the normal and superconducting (SC) state properties of high-T cuprates and infinite-layer nickelates (ILNs) have the same origin. This question has been brought into sharper focus with recent studies on ILNs of improved crystallinity that reveal a SC dome of comparable extent and similar transport properties above T as the hole-doped cuprates. The evolution of these properties in the magnetic-field-induced normal state, however, has yet to be determined.

Background: Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) can trigger a systemic inflammatory response during the perioperative period, which may lead to the consumption of the contact system and the production of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). This study attempted to determine whether the formation of NETs and contact activation are a vivid occurrence during CPB and whether they are related to post-operative atrial fibrillation (AF) and survival.
Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted in 97 patients who underwent aortic valve and/or aorta replacement surgery with CPB.
We study the temperature dependent elastic properties of BaSrTiO freestanding membranes across the ferroelectric-to-paraelectric phase transition using an atomic force microscope. The bending rigidity of thin membranes can be stiffer compared to stretching due to strain gradient elasticity (SGE). We measure the Young's modulus of freestanding BaSrTiO drumheads in bending and stretching dominated deformation regimes on a variable temperature platform, finding a peak in the difference between the two Young's moduli obtained at the phase transition.

Here, to address this looming challenge, we demonstrate that rare-earth metal fluorides with extremely low ion migration barriers can generally exhibit an excellent capacitive coupling over 20 μF cm (with an equivalent oxide thickness of ~0.15 nm and a large effective dielectric constant near 30) and great compatibility with scalable device manufacturing processes.

Objectives: This retrospective study was conducted to evaluate the impact of saphenous vein (SV) harvesting with versus without perivascular tissue on the 5-year angiographic patency in coronary artery bypass grafting.
Methods: Among the 944 patients who received coronary artery bypass grafting between 2010 and 2015, 579 patients who received off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting using 1 SV as a Y-composite graft based on the in situ left internal thoracic artery were enrolled. SV harvesting was performed using no-touch technique without perivascular tissue (the NoPVT group) in 342 patients and with perivascular tissue (the PVT group) in 237 patients.
Background: This study evaluated the difference in brain metabolite profiles between normothermia and hypothermia reaching 25°C in humans in vivo.

We annealed nanometer-thick gold (Au) nanoparticles between two substrates of exfoliated hexagonal molybdenum disulfide (MoS) with varying orientation of their basal planes with a mutual twist angle ranging from 0° to 60°. Transmission electron microscopy studies show that Au aligns midway between the top and bottom MoS when the twist angle of the bilayer is small (<~7°).
