The rapid development of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) and robot-assisted surgery (RAS) requires standardized training to ensure high-quality patient care. In Germany, there is currently a lack of a standardized curriculum that teaches these specialized skills. The aim of this study is to find a consensus for the development of a nationwide curriculum for MIS and RAS with the subsequent implementation of the consented content.

Article Synopsis
  • Progranulin (PGRN) is a neurotrophic and anti-inflammatory protein, and its loss due to human mutations is linked to frontotemporal dementia, with PGRN knockout (KO) mice used to model this condition.
  • Restoration of PGRN in neurons (but not microglia) was achieved in a specific mouse model, allowing researchers to investigate if it could reduce brain damage after traumatic brain injury (TBI).
  • Findings indicated that restoring PGRN in neurons was enough to mitigate excessive brain damage caused by TBI, suggesting that microglial PGRN was not necessary for neuroprotection and anti-inflammatory effects in this context.

Background: Approximately onethird of cancer survivors encounter challenges reintegrating into the workforce, often experiencing involuntary unemployment and/or partial or full work disability following diagnosis and treatment. Returning to paid employment presents evident challenges due to uncertainties regarding work ability, perceived employer discrimination, and a lack of support, thereby risking social exclusion. However, interventions addressing return to paid employment among unemployed and/or work-disabled cancer survivors are scarce.

The aims of this study were to investigate the relationship between self-reported preventive and curative orientations of general dental practitioners (GDPs) and the oral healthcare services (OHS) they provided to patients under 18-years-old. And in addition, to determine which patient, GDP, and dental practice characteristics predicted the provision of preventive and curative care. GDPs in the Netherlands using dental software program Exquise (>2,000) were invited to participate in this study voluntarily.

The histone deacetylase inhibitor (HDACi) valproic acid (VPA) has neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects in experimental traumatic brain injury (TBI), which have been partially attributed to the epigenetic disinhibition of the transcription repressor RE1-Silencing Transcription Factor/Neuron-Restrictive Silencer Factor (REST/NRSF). Additionally, VPA changes post-traumatic brain injury (TBI) brain metabolism to create a neuroprotective environment. To address the interconnection of neuroprotection, metabolism, inflammation and REST/NRSF after TBI, we subjected C57BL/6N mice to experimental TBI and intraperitoneal VPA administration or vehicle solution at 15 min, 1, 2, and 3 days post-injury (dpi).

Background: Detecting cognitive impairments early after stroke is essential for appropriate referrals. Although recommended in stroke guidelines, early cognitive screening is not always implemented. We assessed whether the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) adds diagnostic value compared to clinical observation alone.

Introduction: While awake tracheal intubation (ATI) is regarded as the gold standard for difficult airway management according to current guidelines, there seems to be a reluctance in its application. This retrospective cohort study, conducted at a German tertiary hospital over a 2-year period, aimed to demonstrate that integrating awake tracheal intubation using flexible bronchoscopy (ATI:FB) into routine airway management makes it a successful and safe approach.

Materials And Methods: In 2019 and 2020, records from the data acquisition system (DAQ) and archived anesthesia records were screened to evaluate the specifics of ATI:FB procedures, focusing on overall success and safety.

In this manuscript, we present our concept for training in robotic surgery of the upper gastrointestinal tract. The training concept presented here focuses on the two surgical "user groups", assistants (table assists) and specialists (surgeons), and presents the core aspects of training for each group separately. For table assistants, we present opportunities for early involvement in robotics and our approach to learning the first steps in preparing for surgery, assisting during surgery, as well as communication as a key factor in robotic surgery and alternative training.

General dental practitioners (GDPs) differ in the preventive and curative care they provide to their young patients. This may be related to variation in the caries risk of patients, but also to differing opinions among GDPs about 'proper care'. Longitudinal data offers the possibility to make care patterns of GDPs comparable and to reveal possible treatment variation between GDPs.

The indications for surgical treatment of hiatus hernias differentiate between type I and types II, III and IV hernias. The indications for a type I hernia should include a proven reflux disease but the indications for surgical treatment of types II, III and IV hernias are mandatory due to the symptoms with problems in the passage of food and due to the sometimes very severe possible complications. The primary aims of surgery are the repositioning of the herniated contents and a hiatoplasty, which includes a surgical narrowing of the esophageal hiatus by suture implantation.

There is a lack of training curricula and educational concepts for robotic-assisted surgery (RAS). It remains unclear how surgical residents can be trained in this new technology and how robotics can be integrated into surgical residency training. The conception of a training curriculum for RAS addressing surgical residents resulted in a three-step training curriculum including multimodal learning contents: basics and simulation training of RAS (step 1), laboratory training on the institutional robotic system (step 2) and structured on-patient training in the operating room (step 3).

The connection between dysbiosis of the gut microbiome and diseases and injuries of the brain has attracted considerable interest in recent years. Interestingly, antibiotic-induced microbial dysbiosis has been implicated in the pathogenesis of traumatic brain injury (TBI), while early administration of antibiotics associates with improved survival in TBI patients. In animal models of TBI, short- or long-term administration of antibiotics, both peri- or post-operatively, were shown to induce gut microbiome dysbiosis but also anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the most important causes of death in young adults. After brain injury cortical perfusion is impaired by cortical spreading depression, cerebral microvasospasm or microvascular thrombosis and contributes to secondary expansion of lesion into surrounding healthy brain tissue. The present study was designed to determine the regional cortical perfusion pattern after experimental TBI induced by controlled cortical impact (CCI) in male C57/BL6N mice.
