The widespread use of vision-based surveillance systems has inspired many research efforts on people localization. In this paper, a series of novel image transforms based on the vanishing point of vertical lines is proposed for enhancement of the probabilistic occupancy map (POM)-based people localization scheme. Utilizing the characteristic that the extensions of vertical lines intersect at a vanishing point, the proposed transforms, based on image or ground plane coordinate system, aims at producing transformed images wherein each standing/walking person will have an upright appearance.

Developing synthetic methods to produce carbon dots (CDs) using natural biomass or other readily available carbon sources are currently being explored. We describe a simple and green synthetic method for preparing fluorescent CDs by water extraction from heat-treated shrimp eggs (SE-CDs). The SE-CDs appeared spherical with an average size of 3.

The information about the crystal structure of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) leader protease nsp1α is available to analyze the roles of tRNA abundance of pigs and codon usage of the nsp1 α gene in the formation of this protease. The effects of tRNA abundance of the pigs and the synonymous codon usage and the context-dependent codon bias (CDCB) of the nsp1 α on shaping the specific folding units (α-helix, β-strand, and the coil) in the nsp1α were analyzed based on the structural information about this protease from protein data bank (PDB: 3IFU) and the nsp1 α of the 191 PRRSV strains. By mapping the overall tRNA abundance along the nsp1 α, we found that there is no link between the fluctuation of the overall tRNA abundance and the specific folding units in the nsp1α, and the low translation speed of ribosome caused by the tRNA abundance exists in the nsp1 α.

Chondrosarcomas are a type of primary malignant bone cancer, with a potent capacity for local invasion and distant metastasis. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is commonly upregulated during neurogenesis. The aim of the present study was to examine the mechanism involved in BDNF-mediated vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression and angiogenesis in human chondrosarcoma cells.

For the first time, structural information regarding the role of simvastatin in bone anabolism is described, and a bone-specific statin is introduced. Polyaspartate-conjugated simvastatin was synthesized by solid-phase synthesis with the assistance of microwave irradiation. It displays significant bone targeting and bone formation with less toxicity than simvastatin.

Current interests in enhancing the focus of external validity or transferability call for developing practical evaluation approaches and illustrating their applications in this area for meeting the need. This study takes the challenge by introducing an innovative evaluation approach, named the exhibited generalization approach, and applying it in evaluating the carbon monoxide (CO) alarm ordinance passed by Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. The stakeholders specifically asked evaluators to determine the answers to the following two questions: (1) Does the alarm ordinance work? (2) What generalizable information can the Mecklenburg experience provide to other jurisdictions trying to decide if the alarm ordinance's planning, implementation, adoption, and outcomes are transferable to their communities? This study illustrates how to apply the exhibited generalization approach to provide the stakeholders with answers to these questions.

Introduction: To determine risk factors for subsidence in patients treated with anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) and stand-alone polyetheretherketone (PEEK) cages.

Materials And Methods: Records of patients with degenerative spondylosis or traumatic disc herniation resulting in radiculopathy or myelopathy between C2 and C7 who underwent ACDF with stand-alone PEEK cages were retrospectively reviewed. Cages were filled with autogenous cancellous bone harvested from iliac crest or hydroxyapatite.

To achieve green emission from the sidewall non-polar quantum wells (QWs) of a GaN nanorod (NR) light-emitting diode, regularly patterned InGaN/GaN QW NR arrays are grown under various growth conditions of indium supply rate, QW growth temperature, and QW growth time for comparing their emission wavelength variations of the top-face c-plane and sidewall m-plane QWs based on photoluminescence and cathodoluminescence (CL) measurements. Although the variation trends of QW emission wavelength by changing those growth conditions in the NR structure are similar to those in the planar structure, the emission wavelength range of the QWs on an NR is significantly shorter than that in a planar structure under the same growth conditions. Under the growth conditions for a longer NR QW emission wavelength, the difference of emission wavelength between the top-face and sidewall QWs is smaller.

A conventional handheld skin camera is suitable for 2D inspection of shallow skin. Due to its high resolution and noninvasiveness, optical coherence tomography (OCT) has become a popular medical-imaging technology. Among OCT schemes, full-field optical coherence tomography (FF-OCT) is suitable for rapid en face imaging, as it uses a 2D imaging device for pixel processing of a sample plane.

Self-renewal is the hallmark feature both of normal stem cells and cancer stem cells. Since the regenerative capacity of normal haematopoietic stem cells is limited by the accumulation of reactive oxygen species and DNA double-strand breaks, we speculated that DNA damage might also constrain leukaemic self-renewal and malignant haematopoiesis. Here we show that the histone methyl-transferase MLL4, a suppressor of B-cell lymphoma, is required for stem-cell activity and an aggressive form of acute myeloid leukaemia harbouring the MLL-AF9 oncogene.

Background Context: Absence or inadequate filling of cement in the fractured vertebrae can cause unsatisfactory results in a vertebroplasty. Repeated needle insertion can reduce the incidence of recollapse at the cemented vertebrae. However, when inserting the second needle in the usual method, it takes the same time and radiation exposure as the first needle.

The radiated power enhancement and more congregated radiation of a radiating dipole within a GaN material when it is coupled with the localized surface plasmon (LSP) resonance modes induced on a surface Ag nanoparticle (NP) are numerically demonstrated. The numerical study is based on an algorithm including the induction of LSP resonance on the Ag NP by the source dipole and the feedback effect of the LSP resonance field on the source dipole behavior. The spectral peaks of radiated power enhancement correspond to the substrate LSP resonance modes with mode fields mainly distributed around the bottom of the Ag NP such that the coupling system radiates mainly into the GaN half-space.

Homologous recombination (HR) is initiated by DNA end resection, a process in which stretches of single-strand DNA (ssDNA) are generated and used for homology search. Factors implicated in resection include nucleases MRE11, EXO1, and DNA2, which process DNA ends into 3' ssDNA overhangs; helicases such as BLM, which unwind DNA; and other proteins such as BRCA1 and CtIP whose functions remain unclear. CDK-mediated phosphorylation of CtIP on T847 is required to promote resection, whereas CDK-dependent phosphorylation of CtIP-S327 is required for interaction with BRCA1.

The mechanisms of radical-molecule reactions between HCO (formyl radical) and O3 (ozone) have been investigated by using BH&HLYP and QCISD methods with the 6-311++G(3df,2p) basis set. The energetics have been refined with CCSD(T) and QCISD(T) theoretical approaches with the same basis set based on the geometries calculated at the QCISD method. The intermediates of hydrogen-bonded complexes and the critical transition states are also examined with the multireference methods.

Cancer is associated with a profound perturbation in myelopoiesis that results in the accumulation of myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) to promote disease progression. Recent studies in mice suggest that tumor-derived factors could regulate the differentiation of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) in the bone marrow and subsequently contribute to dysregulation of hematopoiesis. However, the nature and role of HPSCs in patients with cancer remain unknown.
