Smartphone accelerometry to assess postural control in individuals with multiple sclerosis.

Background: Falls are a major health concern for people with Multiple Sclerosis (pwMS), and impaired postural control is an important predictor of falls. Lab-based technology to measure posture is precise but expensive, and clinical tests may not capture underlying impairments. An alternative solution is to leverage smartphone accelerometry as it is affordable, ubiquitous, and portable.

Development of Novel Lightweight Dual-Phase Al-Ti-Cr-Mn-V Medium-Entropy Alloys with High Strength and Ductility.

A novel lightweight Al-Ti-Cr-Mn-V medium-entropy alloy (MEA) system was developed using a nonequiatiomic approach and alloys were produced through arc melting and drop casting. These alloys comprised a body-centered cubic (BCC) and face-centered cubic (FCC) dual phase with a density of approximately 4.5 g/cm.

Management of Isolated Local Failures Following Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy for Low to Intermediate Risk Prostate Cancer.

Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) is a safe and effective treatment option for patients with low to intermediate risk prostate cancer (1). SBRT results in very low PSA nadirs secondary to the delivery of high biologically effective doses. The aim of the study was to investigate the associations between symptoms of autism and emotional and behavioral problems in children with autism spectrum disorder from both caregivers' and clinicians' perspectives. Three main findings were found in our study. First, the association patterns were similar in the preschool and school-aged children.

Background: Epileptic surgery is the potentially curative treatment for children with refractory seizures. The study aimed to quantify and analyze high frequency oscillation (HFO) ripples and interictal epileptiform discharges (EDs) in intraoperative electrocorticography (ECoG) between malformation of cortical dysplasia (MCD) and non-MCD children with MRI-lesional focal epilepsy, and evaluate of seizure outcomes after epileptic surgery.

Methods: The intraoperative ECoG was performed before and after lesionectomy.

This study developed a numerical simulation to understand bone mechanical behavior and micro-crack propagation around a fixation screw with severe mandibular defects. A mandible finite element (FE) model was constructed in a rabbit with a right unilateral body defect. The reconstruction implant was designed to be fixed using six screws distributed on the distal and mesial sides.

Generation of High-resolution Lung Computed Tomography Images using Generative Adversarial Networks.

To deal with the limiting data in training for new deep learning modules, we purpose a method to generate high-resolution medical images by implementing generative adversarial networks (GAN) models. Firstly, the boundary equilibrium generative adversarial networks model was used to generate the whole lung computed tomography images. Image inpainting was then integrated to generate the delicate details of the lung part by dividing into a coarse network and a refinement network to inpaint more completed and intricate details.

Development and validation of the Lo's Healthy and Happy Lifestyle Scale (LHHLS): The resilience in general population facing COVID-19 in Taiwan.

Background: This article explores the effectiveness of development of the Lo's Healthy and Happy Lifestyle Scale (LHHLS), which is an evaluative tool that monitors the resilience of the Taiwan population in times of such COVID-19 epidemic. Also, to verify factors of resilience, namely the reliability and validity of self-efficacy and positive thinking, and establishment of a prospective norm analysis.

Method: The study mainly applied Explorative Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) to develop LHHLS and establish the reliability and validity of the tool's structure, verify norm analysis and the reliability of data from each question using Cronbach's alpha.

Relationships among parenting stress, health-promoting behaviors, and health-related quality of life in Korean mothers of children with cerebral palsy.

Health-promoting behaviors have been shown to enhance the quality of life across diverse populations. In this study, we examined the indirect effects of several health-promoting behaviors on the relationship between parenting stress and health-related quality of life in mothers of children with cerebral palsy (CP). A convenience sample of Korean mothers (N = 180) of children aged 10 months to 12 years with CP was recruited from clinical and school settings.

Towards an Accessible Use of a Brain-Computer Interfaces-Based Home Care System through a Smartphone.

This study proposes a home care system (HCS) based on a brain-computer interface (BCI) with a smartphone. The HCS provides daily help to motor-disabled people when a caregiver is not present. The aim of the study is two-fold: (1) to develop a BCI-based home care system to help end-users control their household appliances, and (2) to assess whether the architecture of the HCS is easy for motor-disabled people to use.

A Motor Learning Approach to Reducing Fall-Related Injuries.

Falls are the leading cause of injury related death in older adults. In this piece, a motor learning lens is applied to falls, and falls are viewed as three interdependent phases: 1) destabilization, 2) descent, and 3) impact. This review examines how movements can be performed in the descent and impact phases to potentially reduce fall-related injuries.

Facile Coupling of Droplet Magnetofluidic-Enabled Automated Sample Preparation for Digital Nucleic Acid Amplification Testing and Analysis.

Digital nucleic acid amplification testing (dNAAT) and analysis techniques, such as digital polymerase chain reaction (PCR), have become useful clinical diagnostic tools. However, nucleic acid (NA) sample preparation preceding dNAAT is generally laborious and performed manually, thus creating the need for a simple sample preparation technique and a facile coupling strategy for dNAAT. Therefore, we demonstrate a simple workflow which automates magnetic bead-based extraction of NAs with a one-step transfer to dNAAT.

A multi-modal virtual reality treadmill intervention for enhancing mobility and cognitive function in people with multiple sclerosis: Protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

Background: Gait and cognitive impairments are common in individuals with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and can interfere with everyday function. Those with MS have difficulties executing cognitive tasks and walking simultaneously, a reflection of dual-task interference. Therefore, dual-task training may improve functional ambulation.

Substantia nigra pars reticulata-mediated sleep and motor activity regulation.

Study Objectives: The substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNR) is a major output nucleus of the basal ganglia. Animal studies have shown that lesions of the SNR cause hyposomnia and motor hyperactivity, indicating that the SNR may play a role in the control of sleep and motor activity.

Methods: Eight 8- to 10-week-old adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were used.

Arterial stiffness late after Kawasaki disease in children: Assessment by performing brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity.

Background: Whether low-risk Kawasaki disease (KD) patients are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease later in life remains controversial. The purpose of this study is to examine the arterial stiffness and exercise performance of KD patients in chronic stage.

Methods: This study included 158 subjects.

Mental health in biological disasters: From SARS to COVID-19.

Background: The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), like severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), provokes fear, anxiety and depression in the public, which further affects mental health issues. Taiwan has used their experience of the SARS epidemic for the management of foreseeable problems in COVID-19 endemic.

Aim/objective: This review summarizes issues concerning mental health problems related to infectious diseases from current literatures.

Background: The tumor immune microenvironment plays a critical role in the prognosis and outcome of breast cancers. This study examined the role of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs), CD8+, FOXP3+ lymphocytes, PD-L1 expression, and other clinicopathological parameters in HER2+ breast cancer and correlate with tumor response to neoadjuvant therapy.

Methods: We included 173 HER2+ patients treated with neoadjuvant HER2-targeted chemotherapy regimens from 2010 to 2016.

Psychiatric hospitals play an important role in supporting patients with mental illness to relieve symptoms and improve functioning in a physically and psychologically safe environment. However, these hospitals are also vulnerable to emerging infectious diseases. In early 2020, a psychiatric hospital and a psychiatric unit were reported to have nosocomial coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether contrast medium volume and method of administration and baseline estimated glomerular filtration rate influence the efficacy of prophylactic hydration for prevention of acute kidney injury after contrast administration. An online search of PubMed conducted on August 25, 2017, produced a total of 697 studies. After the reports were reviewed, nine were included in this study.
