Role of NKX2-1 in N-bis(2-hydroxypropyl)-nitrosamine-induced thyroid adenoma in mice.

NKX2-1 is a homeodomain transcription factor that is critical for genesis of the thyroid and transcription of the thyroid-specific genes. Nkx2-1-thyroid-conditional hypomorphic mice were previously developed in which Nkx2-1 gene expression is lost in 50% of the thyroid cells. Using this mouse line as compared with wild-type and Nkx2-1 heterozygous mice, a thyroid carcinogenesis study was carried out using the genotoxic carcinogen N-bis(2-hydroxypropyl)-nitrosamine (DHPN), followed by sulfadimethoxine (SDM) or the non-genotoxic carcinogen amitrole (3-amino-1,2,4-triazole).

A case of anaplastic carcinoma of the pancreas producing granulocyte-colony stimulating factor.

We report a case of anaplastic carcinoma of the pancreas with production of granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) in a 59-year-old male. He was referred to our hospital with a chief complaint of epigastralgia and suffered from leukocytosis. Differential diagnosis included pancreatic tumors and submucosal tumor of the stomach, but definite preoperative diagnosis could not be made.

Gaps in the information shared on consumer healthcare products.

We conducted a questionnaire survey of visitors to the Japan Drugstore Show 2006 and an additional questionnaire survey of pharmacists in 2008 to ascertain the current information gaps between consumers and manufacturers of consumer healthcare products (CHPs). Three main gaps were apparent: first was a gap between information that consumers wanted to receive and information that was widely disclosed by manufacturers of CHPs, second was a gap between the advisors whom consumers regarded as appropriate and the advisors who consumers had actually consulted, and a gap between what consumers expect pharmacists to know and pharmacists' actual knowledge. Manufacturers' efforts alone will not be able to close these gaps because of the number of regulations.

To detect a lectin from soybean, an electrochemical procedure was developed by the use of a labeling of galactosamine. Because the lectin has binding sites to galactosamine, galactosamine labeled with daunomycin having electroactivity was prepared. When labeled galactosamine (LG) combines with lectin, the part of daunomycin is taken in the binding sites of the lectin and becomes electroinactive.

The simple and rapid spectrophotometric determination of trace chromium(VI) after preconcentration as its colored complex on chitin.

Preconcentration method with collection of metal complexes on a chitin has been applied to the spectrophotometric determination of chromium(VI) in water. The chromium(VI) is collected as its 1,5-diphenylcarbazide(DPC) complex on a column of chitin in the presence of dodecyl sulfate as counter-ion. The Cr-DPC complex retained on the chitin is eluted with a methanol-1 M acetic acid mixture (7:3, v/v), and the absorbance of the eluent is measured at 541 nm.

The bactericidal activities and postantibiotic effects (PAEs) of levofloxacin and gatifloxacin at concentrations corresponding to those in antibiotic eye drops against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains were determined. Levofloxacin and gatifloxacin at concentrations simulating those in eye drops showed lower bactericidal activities and shorter PAEs against fluoroquinolone-resistant strains than against fluoroquinolone-sensitive strains.

Primary adenocarcinoma of the minor duodenal papilla.

A 70-year-old man was admitted to our institution due to aggravation of blood-sugar level control and because an abdominal CT showed dilatation of the main pancreatic duct. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed a flat elevated tumor with central ulceration in the second portion of the duodenum. Subsequent duodenoscopy for a more detailed examination showed that the tumor had originated in the minor duodenal papilla.

Assessment of DNA damage in Japanese nurses handling antineoplastic drugs by the comet assay.

To clarify genotoxic effects of occupational exposure to antineoplastic drugs in Japan, we examined DNA damage, assessed by the comet assay, in 121 female nurses and 46 female clerks working at three hospitals in the northeast of Japan. Development of microchip for rapid pretreatment of trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene volatilized from polluted soil.

In the field of environmental analysis, microchip technology has many attractive features and is expected to realize the miniaturization of analytical instruments allowing on-site and multipoint monitoring using this technology. We propose a new soil analytical system for detecting trichloroethylene (TCE) and tetrachloroethylene (PCE) using a microchip.
