The aim of this study was to assess the rate of hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) coinfection ("the coinfection") in chronic liver disease (CLD) and to reveal overt and hidden HBV infection in patients with antibodies to HCV (anti-HCV). A total of 209 untreated patients (64 with chronic hepatitis B, 79 with chronic hepatitis C and 66 with porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT)) were screened for serological markers of HBV and HCV infection in serum by third generation enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) methods and for HBV DNA and HCV RNA in serum by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The rate of the overt coinfection in chronic hepatitis B was very low (2/64, 3%).

The clinician should quickly review the patient's history, physical examination findings, and laboratory data to determine the presence of cardiovascular disease, assess intravascular volume status, and formulate a plan for induction of anesthesia. The stresses of hypoxia, hypercarbia, acidosis, and extreme fatigue result in near-maximal sympathetic outflow that is manifest as tachycardia, labile blood pressure, and increased myocardial contractility.

The Tasmanian pademelon, Thylogale billardierii, is a medium-sized wallaby that adapts well to captivity and, unlike the well-studied tammar wallaby, is capable of breeding all year round. It may, therefore, be a useful model species for research into the reproductive biology of macropod marsupials. This paper presents necessary background data on histological changes in the reproductive organs and the rate of embryonic growth during gestation in T1 billardierii.

When discovered early the disease is curable. The Caucasian population is burdened with a high incidence of carriers and homozygotes.

Objective: This study was designed to evaluate the effect of hepatic impairment on the pharmacokinetics of lamivudine.
Methods: Sixteen patients not infected with hepatitis B virus or human immunodeficiency virus who had hepatic impairment due to liver cirrhosis were assigned to moderately or severely impaired groups by clinical signs/symptoms, 14C-aminopyrine metabolic activity and caffeine clearance and compared with eight healthy controls. Following a 300-mg dose of lamivudine, blood and urine samples were taken for drug assay.
The authors present their long-term experience with surgical treatment of gastrooesophageal reflux (GER) in childhood. During the period between 1984-1993 they operated 243 children from neonatal age to 18 years. In 241 patients Nissen fundoplication was performed, once Thal's operation and once a modification of Boix-Ochoy's operation.

Quality was evaluated by sending control samples to laboratories and by comparing the results of their assessment with the correct value. A permitted range to results was assessed: for platelets 24%, for leucocyte 20% and for erythrocytes, haemoglobin, haematocrit and the mean corpuscular volume (MCV) 10%.

We show that glucose-induced inactivation of Gal2p is due to its degradation. Stabilization of Gal2p in pra1 mutant cells devoid of vacuolar proteinase activity is observed.

Lormetazepam (N-methyllorazepam) administered intraperitoneally to rats rendered hyperlipidemic by Triton WR-1339 induced an elevation of blood glucose level at all investigated doses. It brought about significant reduction of serum total lipids, total cholesterol and triglycerides. The dose-response relationship was bell-shaped.

The aim of this study was to assess the presence of anti-c22 IgM in patients with chronic hepatitis C and to determine whether the positivity for anti-c22 IgM has an impact on the histological finding in the liver. A total of 88 patients were examined (44 women, 44 men), mean age 48 years.

In rats rendered hyperlipidemic by the administration of Triton WR-1339 temazepam induced significant reductions of serum lipids. The effects was more reduced than of diazepam. The blood glucose level failed to be affected by most of the doses.

In rats rendered hyperlipidemic by the interperitoneal injection of Triton WR-1339, the administration of 4'-chlorodiazepam, a selective agonist of the peripheral type of benzodiazepine (BZO) receptors evoked significant reductions of serum lipids. PK 11195, a specific antagonist of these receptors, partially inhibited these effects. Flumazenil, a selective antagonist of the central BZD receptors, enhanced the lipid lowering activity of 4'-chlorodiazepam.

The intraperitoneal administration of flumazenil, an imidazoldiazepine with selective antagonistic properties on the central benzodiazepine receptors, induced in normoglycemic-normolipidemic rats a significant increase in blood glucose levels and significant decreases in the serum lipids.
