Rationale: There is evidence that perinatal lung development predicts childhood wheeze. However, very few studies have examined whether preschool wheeze is associated with lower premorbid lung function in early infancy, and as yet there is no information relating atopic and non-atopic preschool wheeze to early lung development.
Objective: To examine the association between premorbid infant lung function and preschool wheeze, and to explore associations with atopic and non-atopic wheeze phenotypes.
Statement Of Problem: Noble dental alloys are commonly remelted in the dental laboratory, but the effect of repeated casting on porcelain bond strength requires further documentation.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine if casting up to 3 times affected metal ceramic bond strength for 3 noble alloys using methodology in ANSI/ADA Specification No. 38.
Background: Maternal smoking during pregnancy has detrimental effects on the respiratory health of infants and children. Polymorphisms of antioxidant genes including glutathione-S-transferases (GSTs) have been proposed as candidates for asthma and reduced lung function in children.
Methods: Women enrolled in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children reported smoking habits during pregnancy.
Sex differences in attentional processing and new motor learning remain controversial, and are complicated by the influence of endogenous and exogenous gonadal hormones. Facilitated acquisition of a classically conditioned eyeblink response in oral contraceptive-using women has been reported, as have menstrual cycle-dependent changes in pre-pulse inhibition (PPI). The current study sought to replicate and extend these findings by comparing acquisition of the conditioned eyeblink response and PPI in women currently taking oral contraceptives (OCs), women not taking OCs, as well as men.

Treatment of patients with asthma would be considerably improved if one could accurately predict the likely course of disease over the life course. Recently, with the advent of the era of genome-wide association studies, there has been a monumental shift in our understanding of the genetic factors that underlie inherited susceptibility to asthma.

An investigation of hydrogel and composite mechanical properties indicates that fiber-reinforced PVA hydrogels could replicate the unique anisotropic modulus distribution present in the native meniscus; the most commonly damaged orthopedic tissue. More specifically, fibrous reinforcement successfully increased the tensile modulus of the biomaterial from 0.

However, children vary in the extent to which their ADHD symptoms are exacerbated by the ingestion of food additives. The authors hypothesized that genetic polymorphisms affecting histamine degradation would explain the diversity of responses to additives.

Participants were 80 adults diagnosed with ID. Dependent variables were the composite score and domain scores of the Matson Evaluation of Drug Side-effects (MEDS), which is an instrument used to assess side effects.

Given the "creeping corporatization" of the heath care industry and the unique influence of nonmarket forces on it, we examine whether the three IPO phenomena exist within the industry. We find that hot issue markets, initial underpricing, and negative long-run abnormal returns and sales growth occur among both heath care IPOs and SEOs.

We describe the physiological, cognitive and behavioural profile of a large cohort of infants (6-12 months), children (6-10 years) and adolescents (13-16 years) who were born and are living at three altitude locations in Bolivia ( approximately 500 m, approximately 2500 m and approximately 3700 m). Level of haemoglobin oxygen saturation and end-tidal carbon dioxide were significantly lower in all age groups living above 2500 metres, confirming the presence of hypoxia and hypocapnia, but without any detectable detriment to health.

The human bronchial epithelial cell line (16-HBE 14o-) was cultured in Transwells creating a sustainable and interactive model of the airway epithelium. Conducting polymer polypyrrole (PPy) doped with polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) was electrochemically deposited onto the surface of gold-plated electrodes to reduce the influence of the electrical double layer on the impedance measurements.

BS mutated (Blm), the gene mutated in BS patients, is one of five mammalian RecQ helicases. Although BLM has been shown to promote genome stability by assisting in the repair of DNA structures that arise during homologous recombination in somatic cells, less is known about its role in meiotic recombination primarily because of the embryonic lethality associated with Blm deletion.

Methods: This was a prospective observational cohort study. Paediatric intensive care patients (n = 913) were genotyped for common functional polymorphisms in the endotoxin recognition complex, including Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4).
A-disintegrin-and-metalloproteinase-domains (ADAMs) are membrane-anchored glycoproteins involved in cell adhesion, cell migration and proteolysis. ADAM15 has been implicated in atherosclerosis, with an effect on vascular smooth muscle cell migration. We investigated whether ADAM33, which is evolutionally closely related to ADAM15, was expressed in atheromas and whether it had an effect on vascular smooth muscle migration.

Chlorine atoms can decrease the lifetimes of gaseous elemental mercury and hydrocarbons such as the greenhouse gas methane. Chlorine atoms also influence cycles that catalytically destroy or produce tropospheric ozone, a greenhouse gas potentially toxic to plant and animal life.

While the benefits of this class of psychotropics are noted, debate exists whether the side effect profile of these medications outweigh their therapeutic benefit, especially in those who use them long-term. Tardive Dyskinesia (TD) is a movement disorder often caused by a history of neuroleptic use which can cause deleterious effects.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAllergic diseases are complex genetic diseases resulting from the effect of multiple genetic and interacting environmental factors on their pathophysiology. Recent years have seen considerable progress in unraveling the contribution of these factors to an individual subject's susceptibility to, subsequent development of, and severity of disease. This has resulted in increasing insight into novel areas of allergic disease pathophysiology, for example the significant role played by locally acting tissue susceptibility factors like epithelial/epidermal barrier function and remodeling, such as filaggrin, ADAM33, and GSDML/ORMDL3, in patients with atopic dermatitis and asthma.

Our purpose was to investigate the effect of heat treatment on the reversibility of the tetragonal to monoclinic transformation in 3Y-TZP, and associated surface roughness. The goals were to determine the onset temperature of the reverse transformation, and characterize surface roughness after accelerated aging, and after aging followed by heat treatment. 3Y-TZP disc-shaped specimens were sintered at temperatures from 1300 to 1550 degrees C.

Glutathione-S-transferase (GST) enzymes, which play an important role in antioxidant defences, may therefore influence asthma risk. Two common deletion polymorphisms of GSTM1 and GSTT1 genes and the GSTP1 Ile105Val polymorphism have been associated with asthma in children and adults, but results are inconsistent across studies.

Methods: The analysis was performed on the Royal Free HIV Cohort, London, UK. Each 'drug coverage-viral load episode' (DCVL episode) was defined as a 6-month period immediately prior to a VL < or =50 HIV-1 RNA copies/mL (time-zero), during which the patient had been continuously on HAART, with all measured VLs < or =50 copies/mL.
Miniature high speed label-free cell analysis systems have yet to be developed, but have the potential to deliver fast, inexpensive and simple full blood cell analysis systems that could be used routinely in clinical practice. We demonstrate a microfluidic single cell impedance cytometer that performs a white blood cell differential count. The device consists of a microfluidic chip with micro-electrodes that measure the impedance of single cells at two frequencies.
