Despite the known benefits of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) for breast and endometrial cancer survivors, most are insufficiently active, interventions response is heterogeneous, and MVPA programming integration into cancer care is limited. A stepped care approach, in which the least resource-intensive intervention is delivered first and additional components are added based on individual response, is one strategy to enhance uptake of physical activity programming. However, the most effective intervention augmentation strategies are unknown.

Yet without directly comparing these disparate domains, the region's organization remains unclear; do distinct processes engage discrete subregions, or could different domains engage shared neural correlates and processes? Here, using activation likelihood estimation meta-analyses, the bilateral posterior lateral temporal cortex subregions engaged in 7 domains were directly compared. Although the lengths of the spermatozoa (about 60 μm) and their head region (about 12 μm) are similar to those of other patellogastropods, the structure of the sperm head and midpiece are very different. The head consists of an unusually large acrosome (about 11-μm long) with a broad posterior invagination that houses the relatively small nucleus.

To test this hypothesis in vivo, we generated transgenic mice expressing hMusTRD1alpha1 in skeletal muscle. Adult transgenic mice show a complete loss of slow fibers and a concomitant replacement by fast IIA fibers, resulting in postural muscle weakness.

We examined the regulation of the troponin I slow (TnIs) promoter during skeletal muscle unloading-induced protein isoform transition, by using a transgenic mouse line harboring the -4,200 to +12 base pairs region of the human TnIs promoter. A screening of putative killer yeast strains showed that spore-forming ascomycetous yeasts of the genera Pichia and Williopsis displayed the broadest range of activity against sensitive strains of Candida spp. and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Several yeasts were identified which displayed significant activity against important pathogenic fungi. For example, isolates of the opportunistic human pathogen, Candida albicans, were generally very sensitive to Williopsis mrakii killer yeast activity, whilst killer strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Pichia anomala markedly inhibited the growth of certain wood decay basidiomycetes and plant pathogenic fungi.

MTT reduction can be measured spectrophotometrically at a wavelength of 570 nm and a method is described to assay the cidal activity of Williopsis mrakii killer toxin against sensitive cells of Candida glabrata. The MTT assay is rapid, quantitative and compares favourably with traditional plating techniques for the assessment of sensitive viability.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFIn May 1988 a Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM) service for anti-epileptic drugs was established at Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital. This service was offered as a multidisciplinary team approach involving sisters, doctors, social workers and pharmacists at an epilepsy clinic. Statistics gathered over a 13-month period showed that: (i) epileptic patient numbers increased from 52 to 211 per 4-week cycle, while patients requiring TDM decreased from 40 to 20 per cycle; (ii) phenytoin was the most frequently prescribed anticonvulsant, followed by carbamazepine and phenobarbitone, throughout the period; (iii) TDM did not alter prescribing patterns--approximately 90% of patients were on monotherapy at the beginning and at the end of the assessment period; (iv) 471 serum levels were measured in 280 patients over 13 months.

Acute traumatic lesions of the spine at the third and fourth cervical levels without associated fracture are not common. The eight lesions in this report occurred as a result of injuries sustained during tackle football. They included acute intervertebral disc herniation, anterior subluxation of the third cervical vertebra on the fourth, unilateral dislocation of the joint between the articular processes, and bilateral dislocation of the joints between the articular processes.

Preliminary tests of representative football helmets on cadavers and the Z-90 metal head form showed that a more realistic head model was necessary before it was possible to understand helmet performance. A synthetic model was developed which approached human cadaver performance and at the same time was more rugged and repeatable than a cadaver head.
