Background: 'Big data' has great potential to help address the global health challenge of obesity. However, lack of clarity with regard to the definition of big data and frameworks for effectively using big data in the context of obesity research may be hindering progress. Design and realization of a wide field of view infrared scanning system with an integrated micro-electromechanical system mirror.

We present a wide field of view (FOV) infrared scanning system, designed for single-pixel near-infrared thermal imaging. The scanning system consisted of a two-axis micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) mirror that was incorporated within the lens. The optical system consisted of two groups of lenses and a silicon avalanche photodiode.

Overall survival (OS) of multiple myeloma has improved remarkably over time, with the recent Intergroupe Francophone du Myelome (IFM) 2009 randomized trial reporting a 4-year OS rate of approximately 82% in patients receiving modern therapy. However, survival estimates from clinical trials may overestimate outcomes seen in clinical practice even with the adjustment for age and other key characteristics. The purpose of this study was to determine the OS of myeloma patients seen in routine clinical practice who resembled the cohort studied in the IFM 2009 trial.

The timing and prognostic impact of immune reconstitution has been studied after autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, less is known about its significance in newly diagnosed multiple myeloma. We studied absolute lymphocyte (ALC) and absolute monocyte (AMC) counts at the time of treatment initiation and 1 month thereafter in 771 newly diagnosed patients.

Background: Maintain Your Brain (MYB) is a randomized controlled trial of an online multi-modal lifestyle intervention targeting modifiable dementia risk factors with its primary aim being to reduce cognitive decline in an older age cohort.

Methods: MYB aims to recruit 8,500 non-demented community dwelling 55 to 77 year olds from the Sax Institute's 45 and Up Study in New South Wales, Australia. Participants will be screened for risk factors related to four modules that comprise the MYB intervention: physical activity, nutrition, mental health, and cognitive training.

Quantitative traceable temperature measurement using novel thermal imaging camera.

Conventional thermal imaging cameras, based on focal-plane array (FPA) sensors, exhibit inherent problems: such as stray radiation, cross-talk and the calibration uncertainty of ensuring each pixel behaves as if it were an identical temperature sensor.
