The aim of the present study was to compare the usefulness of premeal rapid-acting and regular insulin in type 2 diabetes patients. A total of 56 type 2 diabetic patients were investigated during hospitalization. Premeal rapid-acting insulin was applied instead of other medications.

He suffered from general fatigue and erectile dysfunction after the treatment with transdermal fentanyl for chronic pain by traffic injury. Endocrine examinations and hormone stimulating tests showed that he had hypogonadotropic hypogonadism.

Although the patient's glycemic control deteriorated following progesterone treatment for the prevention of preterm delivery and miscarriage, it was improved by adjusting the basal insulin rate on the days of progesterone treatment. Excess progesterone is known to impair both insulin sensitivity and secretion.

In this study, we examined the relationship between renal damage and MPO G-463A gene polymorphism that is associated with its transcription activity in diabetic patients. We evaluated the association between MPO G-463A polymorphism and the prevalence of proteinuria and estimated GFR (eGFR) in 1448 Japanese type 2 diabetic subjects.

We examined the annual incidence rate of cardiovascular events in asymptomatic Japanese diabetic patients who underwent gated myocardial perfusion single-photon computed tomography (SPECT).
Methods: Asymptomatic patients (n= 485) aged ≥50 years and with either a maximal carotid artery intima-media thickness of ≥1.

Aims: Pentraxin3 (PTX3), a recently discovered inflammatory mediator, is produced abundantly in various cells in atherosclerotic lesions, and therefore, its plasma level could reflect local inflammation at the site of atherosclerotic lesion. The present study evaluated whether plasma PTX3 levels are associated with subclinical atherosclerosis in young subjects with type 1 diabetes.
Methods: Plasma PTX3 levels, urinary albumin excretion, diabetic retinopathy, and carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) were examined in 78 Japanese type 1 diabetic patients (30 men and 48 women, aged 28.
Type 2 diabetes is characterized by pancreatic β-cell dysfunction and insulin resistance, and the number of patients has markedly increased worldwide. In the diabetic state, hyperglycemia per se and subsequent induction of oxidative stress decrease insulin biosynthesis and secretion, leading to the aggravation of Type 2 diabetes. In addition, there is substantial reduction in expression and/or activities of several insulin gene transcription factors.

The aim of this study is to examine the association of serum copper levels and glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes. We recruited a total of 132 patients with type 2 diabetes, and measured their serum copper levels by atomic absorption spectrometry.

It is recommended that total daily basal insulin dose (TBD) is 50% of TDD and that the carbohydrate-to-insulin ratio (CIR) equals 500 divided by TDD. We recently reported that basal insulin requirement is approximately 30% of TDD.

Research Design And Methods: We prospectively evaluated the association between Calibrated-IBS value, an ultrasonic marker for tissue characteristics of carotid plaque, and CVE in 85 asymptomatic type 2 diabetic patients with carotid plaque.
Results: The median follow-up period was 7.
We herein describe a 59-year-old woman who had undergone a total gastrectomy for gastric carcinoma and suffered from postprandial hypoglycemia characterized by a loss of consciousness and spasms. She was diagnosed with reactive hypoglycemia and treated with nutrition therapy, but the frequency and severity of the hypoglycemic episodes did not decrease. She was subsequently treated successfully with miglitol, an alpha-glucosidase inhibitor (α-GI) taken twice a day; other α-GIs (acarbose and voglibose) were not effective.

However, little information has been obtained about serum YKL-40 levels in type 1 diabetic patients. We evaluated YKL-40 levels and its association with diabetic micro- and macroandgiopathy in 131 young Japanese type 1 diabetic patients without advanced diabetic complications (aged 24.

His endocrine examinations were normal except for one episode of elevated urinary dopamine and noradrenaline levels. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a large solid tumor with calcifications and a slightly lobular edge in the right adrenal gland.

Methods: We recruited 82 healthy Japanese women in their twenties and thirties with their body mass index <25 kg/m(2), and performed anthropometric, sphygmomanometric, and laboratory examinations. Laboratory examinations included adiponectin levels, as well as lipid profiles, glucose, hemoglobin A1c, transaminase, and creatinine levels, from which the glomerular filtration rate was estimated (eGFR).
We retrospectively investigated the effect of adding dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor and tapering sulfonylurea on blood glucose fluctuation in Asian patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus under basal-supported oral therapy (BOT). We recruited twenty-two consecutive Japanese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who had blood glucose fluctuation under the combination therapy of insulin glargine and glimepiride and had sitagliptin initiated with glimepiride tapared. Their hemoglobin A1c levels and mean blood glucose profiles of seven points in self-monitoring blood glucose (SMBG) were 7.

Pancreatic β-cell development is regulated by the sequential expression of a molecular network of transcription factors. In this experiment, we adopted a three-step differentiation protocol to differentiate mES (mouse ES) cells into insulin-secreting cells and overexpressed transcription factors by adenoviral vectors at various combinations at different time of differentiation.

Research Design And Methods: We recruited 269 Japanese patients who underwent endovascular therapy for CLI. Ankle systolic blood pressure and ABI were assessed before endovascular therapy.
We investigated the effect of metformin on hepatic glucose production and peripheral glucose uptake in Asian patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. We recruited ten Japanese patients whose fasting glucose levels remained poorly controlled under meal-time injection of short-acting insulin. Metformin was added to their insulin therapy, and both hepatic glucose production and peripheral glucose uptake were assessed before and one week after metformin treatment, with the use of stable isotope [6,6-²H₂] glucose.

We investigated whether different statistical procedures and clinical settings generate different WC cutoff values in one ethnic population.
Methods: We recruited 3810 Japanese subjects and performed the following three statistical analyses: 1) search for WC cutoff points associated with the risk of clustering metabolic abnormalities, 2) calculation of WC associated with certain body mass index (BMI) levels, 3) evaluation with receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves for the risk.
