[Efficacy and safety of two cephalosporins in the perioperative prophylaxis in patients undergoing abdominal or vaginal hysterectomies or gynaecological laparotomies: a prospective randomized study].

The aim of this study was to compare efficacy and safety of perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis in patients undergoing abdominal or vaginal hysterectomy or gynaecological laparotomy to improve the prevention of surgical wound infections. One hundred and ninety-nine patients were prospectively randomized into two groups: the first group (n = 100) received perioperative prophylaxis using 1 g cefotiam (Spizef) and 0.5 g metronidazole (Clont) intravenously 30 min before surgery, whereas the second group (n = 99) was treated with 2 g cefoxitin (Mefoxitin) intravenously, also 30 min before surgery.

[Effectiveness and tolerance of depot leuprorelin acetate for preoperative endometrium flattening before endometrial ablation. German Leuprorelin Study Group].

Objective: In order to assess the efficacy and tolerability of leuprorelin acetate depot in pre-operative flattening of the endometrium prior to hysteroscopic endometrial ablation, 94 patients from eight centres were included in the per protocol analysis.

Material And Patients: The patients included were pre- or peri-menopausal, had completed their family planning and had intractable uterine bleeding. The primary target criterion was the reduction in maximum endometrial thickness after two injections of leuprorelin acetate depot with an interval of four weeks between injections.

[Effect of iodine application during radioiodine therapy in patients with impending therapy failure].

Aim: We investigated whether additional application of "cold" iodine after therapy with radioiodine could result in a prolongation of the effective half life of iodine-131 and would thus lead to an increase of the effective thyroid radiation dose.

Methods: Time-activity-curves after therapy with radioiodine were analysed in 25 patients (16 women, 9 men). Nine patients suffered from autonomously functioning thyroid nodules, 5 from autonomous multinodular goiter and 11 from Graves' disease.

[Exposure of relatives of patients after stationary radioiodine therapy by inhalation of 131I in their homes].

Aim: From a model of iodine metabolism exhalation coefficients shall become derived to calculate 131I exhalation by patients after a radioiodine treatment. The validity of these exhalation coefficients shall be reviewed by whole body activity measurements of relatives of patients, who inhaled the radioiodine exhaled by the patients in their homes. The exposure of relatives to patients of a nuclear medical ward after release by exhalation of iodine-131 is investigated.

Thyroid acropachy is a typical, though rare complication, of Graves' disease. It is seen in about 1% patients, often after a course of several years. It may occur while the patient is euthyroid, hyper- or hypothyroid.
