We report a significant decrease in turn-on times of light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) by tethering imidazolium moieties onto a cationic Ir complex. The introduction of two imidazolium groups at the ends of the two alkyl side chains of [Ir(ppy)(2)(dC6-daf)](+)(PF(6))(-) (ppy = 2-phenylpyridine, dC6-daf = 9,9'-dihexyl-4,5-diazafluorene) gave the complex [Ir(ppy)(2)(dC6MIM-daf)](3+)[(PF(6))(-)](3) (dC6MIM-daf = 9,9-bis[6-(3-methylimidazolium)hexyl]-1-yl-4,5-diazafluorene). Both complexes exhibited similar photoluminescent/electrochemical properties and comparable electroluminescent efficiencies.

Search for the invisible decay of J/psi in psi(2S) --> pi(+)pi(-) J/psi.

Using psi(2S) --> pi(+)pi(-) J/psi events in a sample of 14.0 x 10(6) psi(2S) decays collected with the BES-II detector, a search for the decay of the J/psi to invisible final states is performed. No signal is found, and an upper limit at the 90% confidence level is determined to be 1.

[Effects of Astragalus injection on proliferation of basal-like breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-468].

Objective: To investigate the effects of Astragalus injection (AI) on basal-like breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-468 and murine bone marrow stromal stem cells (mMSCs).

Methods: MDA-MB-468 cells and primary cultured mMSCs were treated by different concentrations of AI, and with untreated MDA-MB-468 cells as blank control. The morphology of cells was observed by phase-contrast inverted microscope and transmission electron microscopy.

[Clinical features of multiple myeloma patients with extramedullary disease: a report of 40 cases from a single center].

Objective: To analyze the clinical and laboratory features and risk factors of multiple myeloma (MM) with extramedullary disease (EM) and its extraosseous localizations at diagnosis and during the course of MM.

Methods: The clinical features, survival rate and prognostic factors were retrospectively analyzed in 40 patients having EM from a total of 418 MM patients hospitalized in Changzheng Hospital from 1993 to 2006.

Results: Among the 40 patients, the first three localizations of EM involved soft tissue, pleura or peritoneum and central nervous system (CNS).

Based on the former work on the current-voltage characteristics of a multi-needle-to-plate negative corona discharge at atmospheric pressure, the present work uses the method of OES (optical emission spectrum) for measuring N2 emission spectrum, and the morphology determination of the ionization region has been investigated. According to the distribution of N2 second positive band's intensity I(SPB), the highest of all bands, the outline of the ionization region was drawn fairly accurately. The relationship between I(SPB) and discharge current I can be obtained through the volume integral of the I(SPB).

Concerns about deficiencies in the quality of care delivered in US hospitals grew during a time period when an increasing number of hospitals were experiencing financial problems. Our study examines a six-year longitudinal database of general acute care hospitals in 11 states to assess the relationship between hospital financial condition and quality of care. We evaluate two measures of financial performance: operating margin and a broader profitability measure that encompasses both operating and non-operating sources of income.

Stable route-tracking synchronization between two chaotically pulsing semiconductor lasers.

Stable route-tracking synchronization is experimentally demonstrated in two semiconductor lasers with delayed optoelectronic feedback. When the two lasers are stably synchronized, the receiver laser is observed to track the route to chaotic pulsing of the transmitter laser. The stability of the route-tracking synchronization is examined by calculation of the transverse Lyapunov exponents of the coupled system.

Computational approach to drug design for oxazolidinones as antibacterial agents.

A three dimensional Quantitative Structure Activity Relationship (3D-QSAR) model for a series of (S)-3-Aryl-5-substituted oxazolidinones was developed to gain insights into the design for potential new antibacterial agents. It was found that the Comparative Molecular Field Analysis (CoMFA) method yielded good results while the Comparative Molecular Similarity Indices Analysis (CoMSIA) was less satisfactory. Meal distribution, relative validity and reproducibility of a meal-based food frequency questionnaire in Taiwan.

Food frequency questionnaire is an important assessment tool for public health nutrition research. We describe the development history and conducted the validity and reproducibility studies for a meal-based Chinese food frequency questionnaire (Chinese FFQ) by five meal sequences. A total of 51 subjects were recruited to collect dietary information twice (6 months apart) with one 24-hr recall, 7-day food records and the Chinese FFQ.

Increased risks of hip fracture in diabetic patients of Taiwan: a population-based study.

Objective: Using Taiwan's National Health Insurance claim data, we evaluated the age-, sex-, and urbanization-specific incidence density and relative risks of hip fracture in the diabetic population.

Research Design And Methods: Diabetic patients (n = 500,868) and an age- and sex-matched control group (n = 500,248) were linked to inpatient claims (1997-2002) to identify hospitalizations for nontransport accident hip fracture. The person-year approach with Poisson assumption and Kaplan-Meier analysis were used to estimate the incidence and the cumulative event rates.

Insight into the metabolism rate of quinone analogues from molecular dynamics simulation and 3D-QSMR methods.

Molecular dynamics simulation was applied to investigate the metabolism mechanism for quinone analogues. Favourable hydrogen bonds between ligand and NQO1, and parallel orientation between ligand and flavin adenine dinucleotide could explain the difference of metabolism rate (in micromol/min/mg) for quinone analogues. This is consistent with the experimental observation (Structure 2001;9:659-667).

Measurement of transverse single-spin asymmetries for Dijet production in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=200 GeV.

We report the first measurement of the opening angle distribution between pairs of jets produced in high-energy collisions of transversely polarized protons. The measurement probes (Sivers) correlations between the transverse spin orientation of a proton and the transverse momentum directions of its partons. With both beams polarized, the wide pseudorapidity (-1< or = eta < or = +2) coverage for jets permits separation of Sivers functions for the valence and sea regions.

Partonic Flow and phi-Meson production in Au+Au collisions at sqrt radical sNN = 200 GeV.

We present first measurements of the phi-meson elliptic flow (v2(pT)) and high-statistics pT distributions for different centralities from radical sNN=200 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC. In minimum bias collisions the v2 of the phi meson is consistent with the trend observed for mesons. The ratio of the yields of the Omega to those of the phi as a function of transverse momentum is consistent with a model based on the recombination of thermal s quarks up to pT approximately 4 GeV/c, but disagrees at higher momenta.

Measurement of psi2S radiative decays.
