A bisoxamate ligand containing three different types of coordination sites was designed and synthesized. The developed synthetic strategy was adopted to prepare a related 1,2-bis(2-hydroxybenzamido)benzene-derived ligand. Nickel(II) complexes of both the novel ligands were obtained and characterized by X-ray crystallography, NMR, electronic absorption spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations.

In this multicentre study, sera from 803 retransplant candidates, including 775 kidney transplant recipients, were analysed with regard to the presence and specificity of anti-HLA alloantibodies of the IgA isotype using a modified microsphere-based platform. Of the kidney recipients, nearly one-third (n = 237, 31%) had IgA alloantibodies. Mostly, these antibodies were found in sera that also harboured IgG alloantibodies that could be found in a total of 572 (74%) of patients.

Two dinuclear seven-coordinate manganese(II) complexes containing two pentaazamacrocyclic subunits, with imine or amine functionalities, respectively, have been synthesized and characterized in the solid state as well as in aqueous solutions of different pH, by performing X-ray structure analyses, SQUID, potentiometric, electron spray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), electrochemical, and (17)O NMR water exchange measurements (varying temperature and pressure), and by determination of SOD activity. The two manganese(II) centers within the dinuclear structures behave independently from each other and similarly to the manganese centers in the corresponding mononuclear complexes. However, the dinuclear amine complex possesses increased complex stability and acidity of the coordinated water molecules (pK(a2) = 8.

We recently reported the formation of a bridging carbonate complex [{(((Ad)ArO)(3)N)U}(2)(μ-η(1):κ(2)-CO(3))] via reductive cleavage of CO(2), yielding a μ-oxo bridged complex, followed by the insertion of another molecule of CO(2). In a similar strategy, we were able to isolate and characterize a series of mixed carbonate complexes U-CO(2)E-U, U-CS(2)E-U, and even U-OC(S)Se-U, by reacting bridged chalcogenide complexes [{(((Ad)ArO)(3)N)U}(2)(μ-E)] (E = S, Se) with CO(2), CS(2), and COS. These chalcogenido mixed-carbonate complexes represent the first of their kind.

Background & Aims: The antiviral immune response against HCV by CD8+ T cells plays a central role in viral containment. In a large HCV genotype 1b outbreak in Ireland, HLA-B(∗)08 was identified as a risk allele for chronic infection and HLA-A(∗)03 and HLA-B(∗)27 were associated with higher clearance rates. The synthesis and characterization of a series of manganese nitrides in a tripodal chelating tris(carbene) ligand framework is described. Photolysis of [(TIMEN(xyl))Mn(N(3))](+) (where TIMEN(xyl) = tris[2-(3-xylylimidazol-2-ylidene)ethyl]amine) yields the isolable molecular Mn(IV) nitride, [(TIMEN(xyl))Mn(N)](+). Spectroscopic and DFT studies indicate that this Mn(IV) d(3) complex has a doublet electronic ground state.

The new neopentyl (Neop)-substituted tris(aryloxide) U(III) complex [(((Neop,Me)ArO)(3)tacn)U(III)] reacts with CO(2) to form CO and the bridging carbonate complex [{(((Neop,Me)ArO)(3)tacn)U(IV)}(2)(μ-CO(3))]. The uranium(IV) bridging oxo [{(((Neop,Me)ArO)(3)tacn)U(IV)}(2)(μ-O)] has been determined to be the intermediate in this reaction. For the first time, both U(iv) complexes can be reduced back to the U(III) starting material.

The air stable complex [(PNP)FeCl(2)] (1) (PNP = N[2-P(CHMe(2))(2)-4-methylphenyl](2)(-)), prepared from one-electron oxidation of [(PNP)FeCl] with ClCPh(3), displays an unexpected S = 3/2 to S = 5/2 transition above 80 K as inferred by the dc SQUID magnetic susceptibility measurement. The ac SQUID magnetization data, at zero field and between frequencies 10 and 1042 Hz, clearly reveal complex 1 to have frequency dependence on the out-of-phase signal and thus being a single molecular magnet with a thermally activated barrier of U(eff) = 32-36 cm(-1) (47-52 K). Variable-temperature Mössbauer data also corroborate a significant temperature dependence in δ and ΔE(Q) values for 1, which is in agreement with the system undergoing a change in spin state.

We present an X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) study of a series of uranium coordination complexes that possess nearly identical first coordination spheres and geometries in a range of oxidation states from U(III) to U(VI). These compounds were obtained through the activation of small molecules, such as ketones, azides, and carbon dioxide, and upon oxidation of a high-valent U(V)≡O to [U(VI)≡O](+). Most of the compounds have been reported previously.

Background: In kidney transplant recipients endothelial dysfunction is almost a universal risk factor for allograft failure. Adiponectin, an adipocyte derived hormone, has endothelial-protective properties and the high-molecular weight (HMW) multimer is the major active form, exerting anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic effects on endothelial cells. This study evaluated, whether pre-transplant total and HMW multimer adiponectin levels are associated with markers of endothelial dysfunction and arteriosclerosis and predict long-term graft survival in patients after kidney transplantation.

The previously reported uranium(III) complex [(((Ad)ArO)(3)N)U(III)(DME)] (1; Ad = adamantane, DME = 1,2-dimethoxyethane) reacts with the terminal bis-alkynes 1,7-octadiyne or 1,6-heptadiyne in C-C-coupling reactions to form the uranium(IV) vinyl complexes [{(((Ad)ArO)(3)N)U(IV)}(2)(μ-η(2):η(1)-1,2-(CH)(2)-cyclohexane)] (2) and [{(((Ad)ArO)(3)N)U(IV)}(2)(μ-η(2):η(2)-1,2-(CH)(2)-cyclopentane)] (3). With the monoalkynes 1-hexyne or 4-(t)butyl-phenylacetylene, the complexes [{(((Ad)ArO)(3)N)U(IV)}(2)(μ-η(2)(C1):η(1)(C4)-2-(n)Bu-1,3-octadiene)] (4) and [{(((Ad)ArO)(3)N)U(IV)}(2)(μ-η(2)(C4):η(1)(C1)-1,3-di-(p-(t)Bu-phenyl)butadiene))] (5), are formed. These are the first four examples of uranium vinyl complexes that are reported and crystallographically characterized.
