Background: Values-based recruitment is a mandatory process for nursing programmes within UK higher education, with the Nursing Midwifery Council expecting that experts-by-experience are engaged in these recruitment and selection processes. The wider involvement of experts-by-experience in healthcare education is gaining momentum internationally with calls for engagement in all aspects of design and delivery; however, the impact of such involvement in recruitment of nursing students has received little attention, particularly in mental health nursing.

Aim: To understand the impact of expert-by-experience involvement in the values-based recruitment of mental health nursing students from the perspective of candidates, experts-by-experience, and academic staff.

Audiometric hearing tests were conducted at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester at the beginning of the 1930s. The list price for one of its audiometers at that time was 3,500 dollars, which translates into approximately 37,000 dollars in 2003 currency. Physicians and residents in training were responsible for conducting hearing tests in the 1930s and 1940s.

A soluble, high molecular weight, resistance-enhancing compound was isolated from Mycobacterium tuberculosis by fractionation of a dimethylsulfoxide extract of the organism with n-decyl alcohol. The compound contained carbohydrate, protein, fatty acids, and phosphorous. Resistance enhancement was nonspecific in that protection was afforded toward infection with Klebsiella pneumoniae as well as M.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis grew in the presence of toxic concentrations of free fatty acids when an adequate amount of triton WR1339 was added to the medium. Triton produced a solubilizing effect on turbid suspensions of fatty acids, indicating the formation of a detergent-lipid complex. Oleic acid complexed with triton served as a source of carbon for growth of M.

The ability of Mycobacterium kansasii and groups II and III of the atypical mycobacteria to utilize oleic acid, as well as selected carbohydrates and other compounds, as sources of carbon for growth was compared with that of the H37Rv and H37Ra strains of M. tuberculosis. The highest rate of growth of all of the mycobacteria examined occurred in the medium containing oleic acid as the carbon source when single substrates were tested.

Albino rats maintained for 50 to 60 days on rations containing cholesterol, sodium cholate, and thiouracil were found to be highly susceptible to the lethal effects of infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Maximum loss of resistance occurred only when all three components were present in a single ration. A lesser degree of susceptibility resulted from the deletion of one or more of the factors from the diet.
