Challenges encountered to creating a renal biopsy program at a tertiary care academic institution in the United States.

Biopsy is the gold standard for diagnosing renal pathology and the procedure is required to be learned per ACGME guidelines for Nephrology Fellowship graduation. We describe the process for the planning and development of a new Nephrologist directed native renal biopsy program to increase the opportunity to train Nephrology fellows in this procedure. The article outlines the barriers, complications and lessons learned to developing the program, highlighting the key challenges and progress that has been made within a single American tertiary academic medical center.

Comparison of the mid-infrared spectra and prediction equations developed from morning and evening milk samples from twice-a-day milked dairy cows.

Mid-infrared spectroscopy is a technology used globally for quantifying the concentration of fat, protein, lactose, and other constituents in the milk samples of both individual animals and bulk tank milk. Differences in the milk components and yield of cows are known to exist between morning and evening milk; nonetheless, differences in the spectra originating from the same cow from morning and evening milkings have never been investigated. Data were obtained from 2,602 dairy cows from 7 research farms in Ireland.

Achilles Tendon Ruptures in National Hockey League Players: Return to Sport and Performance Impact.

Background: Few studies assess rates of return to play and postinjury performance in National Hockey League (NHL) players who sustain Achilles tendon ruptures. Our objective was to determine the rate of return to play and performance impact among NHL players who undergo surgical repair of Achilles tendon tears.

Methods: NHL players who sustained an Achilles tendon rupture between 2001 and 2021 were identified using a publicly available injury database.

Maximizing viral nucleic acid yield from passive samplers: Evaluating elution and extraction protocols.

The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the need for effective viral tracking in aqueous environments, particularly for non-enteric viruses. Despite advances in wastewater monitoring, surveillance of viruses in freshwater remains limited due to traditional sampling challenges. This study refines GAC-based passive sampling protocols by determining optimal extraction and elution methods for enhancing the recovery of viral nucleic acids in freshwater.

Systemic antimicrobials as an adjunct in the management of periodontitis - which drug is best?

Design: This study is a systematic review and meta-analysis that assesses systemic antimicrobials: azithromycin (AZT) and amoxicillin/metronidazole (AMX/MTZ), as adjuvants to subgingival instrumentation in the treatment of periodontitis. The aim is to establish if one antimicrobial is superior as an adjuvant therapy in the management of periodontal disease.

Study Selection: This systematic review and meta-analysis included randomised controlled trials (RCTs), controlled clinical trials, and prospective and retrospective human studies.

Knowledge and beliefs about dietary inorganic nitrate in a representative sample of adults from the United Kingdom.

Objective: Evaluate knowledge and beliefs about dietary nitrate among United Kingdom (UK)-based adults.

Design: An online questionnaire was administered to evaluate knowledge and beliefs about dietary nitrate. Overall knowledge of dietary nitrate was quantified using a twenty-one-point Nitrate Knowledge Index.

Challenges in Conducting Exercise Recovery Studies in Older Adults and Considerations for Future Research: Findings from a Nutritional Intervention Study.

Maximising the potential benefit of resistance exercise (RE) programs by ensuring optimal recovery is an important aim of exercise prescription. Despite this, research surrounding recovery from RE in older adults is limited and inconsistent. The following randomised controlled trial was designed to investigate the efficacy of milk consumption for improving recovery from RE in older adults.

SIK2 and SIK3 Differentially Regulate Mouse Granulosa Cell Response to Exogenous Gonadotropins In Vivo.

Salt-inducible kinases (SIKs), a family of serine/threonine kinases, were found to be critical determinants of female fertility. SIK2 silencing results in increased ovulatory response to gonadotropins. In contrast, SIK3 knockout results in infertility, gonadotropin insensitivity, and ovaries devoid of antral and preovulatory follicles.

Δ9-Tetrahydrocannabinol and 11-hydroxy-Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol as markers of cannabis use in urinary drug testing.

With some exceptions, California Assembly Bill 2188 will preclude the use of ∆9-tetrahydrocannabinol-9-carboxylic acid (Δ9-THC-COOH) as a marker of cannabis use in urinary workplace drug testing. The bill allows for the use of psychoactive cannabis markers, which include Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC) and the metabolite 11-hydroxy-Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (11-OH-Δ9-THC). Both analytes are present in urine mainly as conjugated metabolites and will require hydrolysis prior to analysis, but very little is known about expected concentrations in urine.

From capture to detection: A critical review of passive sampling techniques for pathogen surveillance in water and wastewater.

Water quality, critical for human survival and well-being, necessitates rigorous control to mitigate contamination risks, particularly from pathogens amid expanding urbanization. Consequently, the necessity to maintain the microbiological safety of water supplies demands effective surveillance strategies, reliant on the collection of representative samples and precise measurement of contaminants. This review critically examines the advancements of passive sampling techniques for monitoring pathogens in various water systems, including wastewater, freshwater, and seawater.

Innovative approaches to cardiovascular safety pharmacology assessment.

This editorial prefaces the annual themed issue on safety pharmacology (SP) methods which has been published since 2004 in the Journal of Pharmacological and Toxicological Methods (JPTM). Here we highlight content derived from the 2023 Safety Pharmacology Society (SPS) meeting held in Brussels, Belgium. The meeting generated 138 abstracts, reproduced in the current volume of JPTM.

A case for genetic testing: Arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy presenting as myocarditis.

Arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM) is an inherited cardiomyopathy associated with fibrofatty tissue replacement of the ventricular tissue. The disease can cause ventricular dysfunction and arrhythmias and can increase the risk of sudden cardiac death. This cardiomyopathy can have variable clinical presentations, especially in the pediatric and young adult populations.

A prospective observational study comparing rates of medical instability between adolescents with typical and atypical anorexia nervosa.

Background: Recognition of atypical anorexia nervosa (AAN) has challenged underweight as a defining factor of illness severity in anorexia nervosa (AN). The present study aimed to compare rates of medical instability in adolescents with underweight (AN) and non-underweight (AAN) anorexia nervosa.

Methods: The study examined assessment data from specialist eating disorder services in the UK between January and December 2022.

Stability of Nano-Emulsified Cannabidiol in Acidic Foods and Beverages.

Food and beverage products containing cannabidiol (CBD) is a growing industry, but some CBD products contain Δ-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ-THC), despite being labeled as "THC-free". As CBD can convert to Δ-THC under acidic conditions, a potential cause is the formation of Δ-THC during storage of acidic CBD products. In this study, we investigated if acidic products (pH ≤ 4) fortified with CBD would facilitate conversion to THC over a 2-15-month time period.

The development, use, and challenges of electromechanical tissue stimulation systems.

Background: Tissue stimulations greatly affect cell growth, phenotype, and function, and they play an important role in modeling tissue physiology. With the goal of understanding the cellular mechanisms underlying the response of tissues to external stimulations, in vitro models of tissue stimulation have been developed in hopes of recapitulating in vivo tissue function.

Methods: Herein we review the efforts to create and validate tissue stimulators responsive to electrical or mechanical stimulation including tensile, compression, torsion, and shear.

Higher plant-derived nitrate intake is associated with lower odds of frailty in a cross-sectional study of community-dwelling older women.

Purpose: Dietary nitrate intake is inversely related to numerous contributors towards frailty, including cardiovascular disease and poor physical function. Whether these findings extend to frailty remain unknown. We investigated if habitual nitrate intake, derived from plants or animal-based foods, was cross-sectionally associated with frailty in women.

Reimagining care: effectiveness of modifying an adolescent eating disorder intensive service.

Aims And Method: The COVID-19 pandemic prompted a surge in adolescent eating disorders and rapid changes in the delivery of intensive community treatments. This study investigates the modification from a group-based day programme to an intensive family treatment approach. A retrospective chart review was performed on data from 190 patients who accessed the intensive service for anorexia nervosa in the past 6 years.

Cannabidiol - an effective analgesic for toothache?

Design: The study by Chrepa et al. is a randomised, placebo-controlled, triple-arm, phase IIA clinical trial with double masking which investigates the effectiveness and safety of Cannabidiol (CBD) as an analgesic for acute dental pain. The intervention drug, Epidiolex is an FDA-approved CBD oral solution (100 mg/ml) derived from the cannabis plant.
