Femoral catheters are commonly viewed as a barrier to Burn ICU mobility progression due to anatomical location and potential risk of complications. The purpose of this review was to examine outcomes and complication rates following implementation of femoral catheter mobilization guidelines, as well as determine safety and feasibility of mobilization with femoral catheters in place within the burn population. A retrospective review was completed on 17 patients prior to and following the implementation of new femoral catheter mobility guidelines, 34 patients total.

Isolation of rodents throughout adolescence is known to induce many behavioral abnormalities which resemble neuropsychiatric disorders. Separately, this paradigm has also been shown to induce long-term metabolic changes consistent with a pre-diabetic state. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a complex systemic disease that primarily involves motor neuron dysfunction and skeletal muscle atrophy. One commonly used mouse model to study ALS was generated by transgenic expression of a mutant form of human superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) gene harboring a single amino acid substitution of glycine to alanine at codon 93 (G93A*SOD1). Although mutant-SOD1 is ubiquitously expressed in G93A*SOD1 mice, a detailed analysis of the skeletal muscle expression pattern of the mutant protein and the resultant muscle pathology were never performed.

Introduction: Pneumomediastinum is a rare complication of blunt traumatic injury and is thought to be due to the Macklin effect, a pathophysiologic process comprised of three steps: alveolar rupture secondary to blunt injury; air dissecting along bronchovascular sheaths; and spread of pulmonary interstitial edema into the mediastinal space. Pneumomediastinum is rarely associated with pneumoretroperitoneum.

Case Report: We present a case of a patient who suffered a cardiac arrest after a fall during a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease exacerbation, leading to pneumoretroperitoneum.

The recent rise in illicit use of methamphetamine (METH), a highly addictive psychostimulant, is a huge health care burden due to its central and peripheral toxic effects. Mounting clinical studies have noted that METH use in humans is associated with the development of cardiomyopathy; however, preclinical studies and animal models to dissect detailed molecular mechanisms of METH-associated cardiomyopathy development are scarce. Background:  Deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) reconstruction can be performed in an immediate (at time of mastectomy), delayed-immediate (immediate tissue expander followed by staged DIEP), or delayed timing following mastectomy. Avoiding flap radiation is a known benefit of the delayed-immediate approach. The purpose of this study is to evaluate patients who chose DIEP flap as the reconstructive method during initial consultation and compared characteristics of surgery in relation to their final reconstructive choice.

Early mobilization with mechanically ventilated patients has received significant attention within recent literature; however, limited research has focused specifically on the burn population. The purpose of this single-center, retrospective analysis was to review the use of a burn critical care mobility algorithm, to determine the safety and feasibility of a burn vented mobility program, share limitations preventing mobility progression at our facility, and discuss unique challenges to vented mobility with intubated burn patients.
