The complex between manganese (Mn) porphyrins and catalase-poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) conjugates has been designed for the protective effect against hepatic ischemia/reperfusion injury in vivo. The resulting Mn-porphyrin/catalase-PEG complex with dual enzymatic activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase enhanced the blood circulation. The spin reduction rate in the rats treated with the Mn-porphyrin/catalase-PEG complex was significantly higher than that in the untreated rats and almost equal to that in the sham group rats.

The surface modification technique is a process that changes the surface composition, structure and morphology of a material, leaving the bulk mechanical properties intact. A tremendous number of surface modification techniques using dry and wet processes to improve the hard tissue compatibility of titanium have been developed.

We intended to apply the (13)C breath test method to mice with an easy-to-handle solid test meal that is more physiological than liquid meals. Male ddY mice were trained to eat (13)C-acetate-containing pellets as the solid test meal.

A 20-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital due to massive ascites and dehydration. This patient was diagnosed as having pancreatic ascites caused by the rupture of pancreatic pseudocyst, and the pseudocyst seemed to have caused by the trauma that she sustained 2 months before.

RGD was immobilized on Ti through PEG, both terminals of which were terminated with -NH(2) and -COOH to combine with the Ti surface and RGD. PEG was immobilized on Ti with electrodeposition, and RGD, with immersion.

The isoelectric points (IEPs) of two zwitterions, glycine and both-terminals-terminated poly(ethylene glycol) (NH(2)-PEG-COOH), were determined from the titration curves, and the thicknesses of zwitterion layers immobilized on titanium (Ti) with immersion and electrodeposition at various pH based on IEPs were evaluated with ellipsometry to investigate the effect of pH and the immobilization technique on the interactions between the zwitterions and the Ti surface. From the titration curves, pK(1), pK(2), and the IEP of glycine were determined as 2.8, 8.

To clarify the antidepressant-like effect of PAH, the inhaled effect of PAH on stress-induced depression-like model mice prepared by subjection to a combination of forced swimming and chronic mild stresses was investigated.

Although abdominal bloating is one of the most bothersome symptoms experienced by patients with functional dyspepsia (FD), therapeutic drugs to relieve abdominal bloating have not been established. We investigated the Kampo (Chinese herbal) medicine, Hangekobokuto (Banxia-houpo-tang, HKT) for patients with FD from the standpoint of bowel gas retention. The bowel gas volume calculated from a plain abdominal radiogram (gas volume score, GVS) in FD patients was significantly higher than that in healthy subjects.

It is also well known that stress and depression can disrupt neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus; however, it is unclear how OX-A is involved in depression and/or neurogenesis. In the present study, we investigated the effect of i.

Method: A retrospective evaluation of Kampo treatment in 176 subjects with dysmenorrhea during the previous 12 years was performed. In order to minimize the subjective discretion of the severity of symptoms, classification of the severity level of abdominal pain during menstruation was applied by considering the requirement for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and disturbance of daily activities.
A formulation study of intravesical oxybutynin (OB) preparations was carried out in order to improve the effectiveness in intravesical instillation therapy for spastic neurogenetic bladder. Sodium hyaluronate (HYA) was introduced to enhance the muco-adhesiveness of the instillation preparation, and the physicochemical properties of the OB formulation were evaluated in comparison with a conventional formulation containing hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC). The viscous properties and in vitro adhesiveness increased with the amount of the polymeric additives, and retention properties of OB in rabbit bladder were comparable after addition of 0.

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is used to identify the exact phase deposited, so that reliable estimation of the electrochemical processes involved is made. Analysis of the integrated intensity of the oxygen shake-up peaks, in combination with the determination of Ca/P and O/Ca atomic ratios, enables to determine unambiguously that the octacalcium phosphate (OCP) is formed.

The iron systems were differentially expressed in vivo, showing early induction of the alcaligin and enterobactin siderophore systems, and delayed induction of the haem system in a manner consistent with predicted changes in host iron source availability during infection. Previous mixed infection competition studies established the importance of alcaligin and haem utilization for B.

The effects of 3-week exercise training on the functions of peritoneal macrophages from BALB/c mice were investigated. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated nitric oxide (NO) and proinflammatory cytokine production in macrophages from trained mice was markedly higher than those from control mice. Meanwhile, exercise training decreased the steady state level of beta(2)-adrenergic receptor (beta(2)AR) mRNA in macrophages.

To this end, the shear bond strength of Ti/SPU interface of Ti-SPU composite under varying conditions of ultraviolet ray (UV) irradiation was evaluated by a shear bond test. The glass transition temperatures of SPU with and without UV irradiation were also determined using differential scanning calorimetry.

Active hydroxyl groups on Ti surface oxide were controlled by immersion in hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) with different lengths of immersion time, and the resulting concentrations of active hydroxyl groups were evaluated using a zinc-complex substitution technique. For the H2O2-treated Ti, it was characterized using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron spectroscopy.
