Clinical trial of intra-articular injection of sodium hyaluronate in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee.

A multi-centre randomized, double-blind, parallel-group clinical trial was carried out in 63 patients with osteoarthritis of the knee to compare the efficacy and tolerability of a course of intra-articular injections of 20 mg sodium hyaluronate with a similar course of injections of placebo. Treatment consisted of up to 11 injections over a 23-week period. Evaluation was by means of subjective symptom and activity assessments, serially during the course of treatment and also 25 weeks thereafter.

Arabinose-induced binding of AraC protein to araI2 activates the araBAD operon promoter.

The state of Escherichia coli araI DNA occupancy by AraC protein has been found to change from a two-turn to a four-turn occupancy upon the addition of the inducer arabinose. The araI site is separable into two contiguous regions, araI1 and araI2. araI1 binds both ligand-bound and ligand-free AraC protein, whereas araI2 binds AraC protein in the presence of arabinose only.

Association between azathioprine therapy and lymphoma in rheumatoid disease.

Three out of 41 patients treated with azathioprine and low-dose corticosteroids from 1976 to 1983 developed non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. This strikingly high incidence of lymphoma may be a reflection of long-term use of azathioprine.

Ovulation induction by human menopausal gonadotropin with ultrasonic monitoring of the ovarian follicles.

One hundred sixteen cycles of human menopausal gonadotropin (hMG) treatment for ovulation induction were studied. The ovarian response to hMG treatment was monitored by the daily determination of serum estradiol (E2) or by daily serum E2 and repeated ultrasonic examination of the ovaries. There were more follicles 18 mm in diameter or larger at the time of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) administration in the pregnancy than in the non-pregnancy cycles, and in the hyperstimulated than in the nonhyperstimulated cycles.

Prenatal diagnosis of congenital non-bullous ichthyosiform erythroderma (lamellar ichthyosis).

We report the first positive prenatal diagnosis of congenital non-bullous ichthyosiform erythroderma or lamellar ichthyosis. Fetal skin samples were obtained by fetoscopy at 21 weeks' gestation and examined by light and electron microscopy. Light microscopy revealed a thickened interfollicular epidermis with multiple layers of flattened cells and excessive keratinization of the epidermal lining of the follicular infundibulum.

Maternal age and primary cesarean section rates: a multivariate analysis.

To study the effect of maternal age on primary cesarean section rates, 3458 consecutive deliveries were analyzed. The cesarean section rates in primiparous women less than 25, 25 to 34, and over 34 years of age were 13.1%, 18.

Prenatal ultrasonic diagnosis of multiple bowel atresias.

This case illustrates the course of an obstructive process through spontaneous perforation resulting in decompression of dilated bowel loops. The resulting meconium peritonitis appeared as fetal ascites. Postnatal investigations and laparotomy confirmed the diagnosis of a rare form of multiple congenital atresias of the bowel.

Repression and catabolite gene activation in the araBAD operon.

Catabolite gene activation of the araBAD operon was examined by using catabolite gene activator protein (CAP) site deletion mutants. A high-affinity CAP-binding site between the divergently orientated araBAD and araC operons has been previously identified by DNase I footprinting techniques. Subsequent experiments disagreed as to whether this site is directly involved in stimulating araBAD expression.

The Chernobyl accident--radionuclide fallout in S.W. England.

Initial fallout data from the nuclear reactor accident at Chernobyl is presented for the Plymouth region of Devon S.W. England which received low levels of radioactivity.

Ambulatory pulmonary arterial pressures in humans: relationship to arterial pressure and hormones.

Six healthy volunteers were studied by use of a continuous ambulatory recording technique to document the normal range and variability of pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) and to examine its relationship to systemic arterial pressure (SAP) both at rest and during standardized interventions. Vasoactive hormone levels were measured at frequent intervals. Over 8-10 h of study the mean PAP was 15.

The antenatal sonographic visualization of cloacal dysgenesis.

Hydronephrosis associated with a septated cystic structure in the fetal pelvis in the absence of an otherwise identifiable fetal bladder should alert the sonographer to the possibility of a persistent cloaca. Problems associated with compromised urinary tract drainage and the associated oligohydramnios occurring early in gestation as well as frequent association of anomalies with other organ systems must be addressed. Squamous epithelia in fetal bladder aspirate is further supportive evidence for the diagnosis.

In vitro biological activities of Escherichia coli-derived bovine interferons-alpha, -beta, and -gamma.

The infectious yields of several bovine viruses were inhibited in bovine cells treated with purified preparations of E. coli-derived bovine interferons (BoIFNs)-alpha, -beta, and -gamma. BoIFN-beta 2, encoded by one member of the BoIFN-multigene family, had more potent antiviral and antiproliferative activities than the product of one member of the class-I IFN-alpha gene family (BoIFN-alpha I1).

The organization of the araBAD operon of Escherichia coli.

The nucleotide (nt) sequence of the araBAD operon of Escherichia coli B/r has been determined. The nt sequence predicts a transcript of about 4250 nt. The coding regions of araB, araA and araD genes were identified by partial amino acid (aa) sequences of the purified proteins and their cleavage products.

Biochemical examination of fetal skin biopsy specimens obtained by fetoscopy: use of the method for analysis of keratins and filaggrin.

This paper describes a method for biochemical analysis of proteins from fetal skin biopsy samples. The method has wide potential application for diagnosis of disorders with a known protein abnormality detectable by protein staining or a specific antibody. Analysis requires a single 1 mm biopsy, is rapid (2 days) and extremely sensitive.

Effect of bovine alpha 1 interferon on bovine herpesvirus type 1-induced respiratory disease.

Treatment of calves with bovine recombinant alpha 1 interferon prior to challenge with bovine herpesvirus type 1 increased the animals' ability to withstand a subsequent Pasteurella haemolytica challenge. The reduction in viral-bacterial synergy observed following interferon treatment did not appear to be due to a direct effect of the interferon on virus replication in the upper respiratory tract. Thus, even though interferon-treated animals shed slightly less virus from their nasal passages than did untreated animals, this reduction was not statistically significant.

Endogenous angiotensin-aldosterone-pressure relationships during sodium restriction.

The effects of moderate restriction of dietary sodium and potassium supplementation on plasma levels of renin, angiotensin II, aldosterone, and cortisol and on arterial pressure were studied in 12 patients with mild essential hypertension. To define hormone-blood pressure relationships, venous hormone levels were measured hourly and intra-arterial pressure continuously for 24 hours after 4 to 6 weeks of sodium restriction, 4 to 6 weeks of potassium supplementation, and a similar period of control diet. Our results show that compared with the control diet, moderate sodium restriction was associated with increased levels of aldosterone but no overall change in renin, angiotensin II, or cortisol levels.

Prosthesis with electric elbow and hand for a three-year-old multiply handicapped child.

The usefulness of wisely prescribed powered components in the rehabilitation of upper extremity amputees has long been recognized (Schmidl, 1973). Their value is especially evident in the prosthetic rehabilitation of high level adult and child amputees (Heger et al, 1985). In recent years, manufacturers of prosthetic hardware have provided practitioners with a wide selection of either myo-electrically or switch controlled electromechanical components and systems.

Vascular abnormalities in a fetus with multiple pterygia.

We describe a 16-week fetus with a lethal multiple pterygium syndrome and hydrops. No bony abnormalities were noted on radiographic or anatomical examination. A prominent meshwork of dilated, thin-walled vessels was present in the subcutis over the entire body.

Effect of gramicidin on methanogenesis by various methanogenic bacteria.

Methanogenesis by Methanobacterium thermoautotrophicum strains was extremely sensitive to gramicidin, total inhibition being observed at 0.2 mug/ml. In contrast, methane synthesis by Methanococcus voltae, Methanogenium marisnigri, Methanosarcina mazei, and Methanospirillum hungatei were resistant to the highest concentrations of gramicidin tested (40 mug/ml), although spheroplasts of Methanospirillum hungatei were extremely sensitive.

Prevention of immune precipitation by purified components of the alternative pathway.

The role of the alternative pathway in complement-mediated prevention of immune precipitation has been investigated by the use of BSA-anti-BSA immune complex (IC) purified components. For immune precipitation to be prevented all six alternative pathway components (C3, factors B D, P, H and I) were required. In the absence of one or both of the control proteins H and I, excessive fluid phase turnover of C3 occurred with precipitation of IC.
