Instruments capable of probing single-molecule forces typically cost >US$100,000, limiting the use of these techniques. The centrifuge force microscope (CFM) is a low-cost and easy-to-use instrument that enables high-throughput single-molecule studies.

Objectives: This study investigated the prevalence of potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) and prescribing omissions (PPOs) at hospital admission and discharge.

Two-step deep-learning identification of heel keypoints from video-recorded gait.

Accurate and fast extraction of step parameters from video recordings of gait allows for richer information to be obtained from clinical tests such as Timed Up and Go. Current deep-learning methods are promising, but lack in accuracy for many clinical use cases. Extracting step parameters will often depend on extracted landmarks (keypoints) on the feet.

Short-term learning effect of ChatGPT on pharmacy students' learning.

Introduction: Students in pharmacy are positive towards integrating artificial intelligence and ChatGPT into their practice. The aim of this study was to investigate the direct short-term learning effect of using Chat GPT by pharmacy students.

Methods: This was an experimental randomized study.

A new maximum age observed within the family Labridae, ballan wrasse Labrus bergylta.

Ballan wrasse Labrus bergylta is the largest species of wrasse inhabiting European waters and one of the longest-living species within the family Labridae. A large specimen was caught off the coast of Skjerjehamn, western Norway (total length = 410 mm; weight = 1274 g). The age of the specimen was determined to be 34 years old based on the analysis of its opercula bones.

Tuning the stability of DNA tetrahedra with base-stacking interactions.

DNA nanotechnology relies on programmable anchoring of regions of single-stranded DNA through base pair hybridization to create nanoscale objects such as polyhedra, tubes, sheets, and other desired shapes. Recent work from our lab measured the energetics of base-stacking interactions and suggested that terminal stacking interactions between two adjacent strands could be an additional design parameter for DNA nanotechnology. Here, we explore that idea by creating DNA tetrahedra held together with sticky ends that contain identical base pairing interactions but different terminal stacking interactions.

Health-related quality of life among older adults following acute hospitalization: longitudinal analysis of a randomized controlled trial.

Purpose: To describe the longitudinal change of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) over 12 months from acute hospitalization in older adults ≥ 70 years (IMMENSE study), and associated factors, to investigate how a medication optimization intervention influenced this change.

Methods: The EQ-5D-3L was used at discharge and 1, 6 and 12 months after discharge during a randomized controlled trial including 285 participants. Multilevel logistic (EQ-5D-3L dimensions) and mixed model regression (EQ-5D-3L index scores, EQ-VAS) were used to explore the longitudinal change with/without the intervention, and associations with medications, comorbidities, and socioeconomic variables.

Resolving altered base-pairing of RNA modifications with DNA nanoswitches.

There are >170 naturally occurring RNA chemical modifications, with both known and unknown biological functions. Analytical methods for detecting chemical modifications and for analyzing their effects are relatively limited and have had difficulty keeping pace with the demand for RNA chemical biology and biochemistry research. Some modifications can affect the ability of RNA to hybridize with its complementary sequence or change the selectivity of base pairing.

Despite the increasing importance of measuring quality of care, there is no general definition of Quality Indicators (QIs) to measure PhC. Recognising this, a working group in a European association of PhC researchers, the Pharmaceutical Care Network Europe (PCNE), was established in 2020.

A non-enzymatic test for SARS-CoV-2 RNA using DNA nanoswitches.

The emergence of a highly contagious novel coronavirus in 2019 led to an unprecedented need for large scale diagnostic testing. The associated challenges including reagent shortages, cost, deployment delays, and turnaround time have all highlighted the need for an alternative suite of low-cost tests. Here, we demonstrate a diagnostic test for SARS-CoV-2 RNA that provides direct detection of viral RNA and eliminates the need for costly enzymes.

Fluorometric Determination of DNA Nanostructure Biostability.

The analysis and improvement of DNA nanostructure biostability is one of the keys areas of progress needed in DNA nanotechnology applications. Here, we present a plate-compatible fluorometric assay for measuring DNA nanostructure biostability using the common intercalator ethidium bromide. We demonstrate the assay by testing the biostability of duplex DNA, a double crossover DNA motif, and a DNA origami nanostructure against different nucleases and in fetal bovine serum.
