This two-part article deals with the intensive medical care of traumatic brain injury. Part 1 addresses the primary treatment strategy, haemodynamic management and multimodal monitoring, Part 2 secondary treatment strategies, long-term outcome, neuroprognostics and chronification. Traumatic brain injury is a complex clinical entity with a high mortality rate.

Addressing loneliness and social isolation through the involvement of primary and secondary informal caregivers in nursing homes: a scoping review.

Objectives: To clarify the mechanisms of interventions addressing loneliness and social isolation in older adults living in nursing homes through the involvement of primary and secondary informal caregivers.

Methods: This scoping review was performed by two independent reviewers, covering the period between 2011 and 2022 and the databases MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO and Scopus. It included terms related to (A) informal caregivers, (B) nursing homes, (C) psychosocial interventions, (D) involvement and (E) social isolation or loneliness.

Learning about Grandparents' Past Life: Reflections of Grandchildren in an Intergenerational Reminiscence Project for Asian American Families.

Immigration, aging, and dementia often result in a triple jeopardy for Asian American older adults. To improve the well-being of Asian American older adults as well as generational bonding, an Intergenerational Grandparent-Grandchild Reminiscence Program was developed. This paper qualitatively reports on the weekly reflections from the grandchild participants of this program.

The development of smart eldercare in China.

Background: Many countries have tried to establish an optimal model for managing population aging that can be replicated and promoted. With the increasing societal task of delivering care to older adults with chronic conditions, China has started to harness the power of digital technologies to help address the growing demands for eldercare. China is exploring a unique "Smart Eldercare" model to respond to the social service needs of older adults.

Intergenerational Reminiscence Approach in Improving Emotional Well-Being of Older Asian Americans in Early-Stage Dementia Using Virtual Reality: Protocol for an Explanatory Sequential Mixed Methods Study.

Background: After a dementia diagnosis, Asian Americans experience anxiety, feelings of shame, and other negative effects. Emotional well-being is not only an important aspect of mental health, but also a quality of resilience that helps people bounce back faster from difficulties. However, few studies have addressed issues in developing, implementing, and testing intervention strategies to promote emotional well-being among older adults.

Thoracic responses and injuries to male postmortem human subjects (PMHS) in rear-facing seat configurations in high-speed frontal impacts.

One potential nonstandard seating configuration for vehicles with automated driving systems (ADS) is a reclined seat that is rear-facing when in a frontal collision. There are limited biomechanical response and injury data for this seating configuration during high-speed collisions. The main objective of this study was to investigate thoracic biomechanical responses and injuries to male postmortem human subjects (PMHS) in a rear-facing scenario with varying boundary conditions.

Age interferes with sensorimotor timing and error correction in the supra-second range.

Introduction: Precise motor timing including the ability to adjust movements after changes in the environment is fundamental to many daily activities. Sensorimotor timing in the sub-and supra-second range might rely on at least partially distinct brain networks, with the latter including the basal ganglia (BG) and the prefrontal cortex (PFC). Since both structures are particularly vulnerable to age-related decline, the present study investigated whether age might distinctively affect sensorimotor timing and error correction in the supra-second range.

Cross-species experiments reveal widespread cochlear neural damage in normal hearing.

Animal models suggest that cochlear afferent nerve endings may be more vulnerable than sensory hair cells to damage from acoustic overexposure and aging. Because neural degeneration without hair-cell loss cannot be detected in standard clinical audiometry, whether such damage occurs in humans is hotly debated. Here, we address this debate through co-ordinated experiments in at-risk humans and a wild-type chinchilla model.

Remittances and Household Spending Strategies: Evidence from the Life in Kyrgyzstan Study, 2011-2013.

Globalized labor migration and remittances can help alleviate household poverty and provide supplemental income in many countries. Kyrgyzstan, like other Central Asian countries, has experienced dramatic geopolitical changes, economic reform, and rapid demographic shifts in the post-Soviet-Union era. Based on measurements of GDP, it is one of the most remittance-dependent countries in the world.

What Animal Cancers teach us about Human Biology.

Cancers in animals present a large, underutilized reservoir of biomedical information with critical implication for human oncology and medicine in general. Discussing two distinct areas of tumour biology in non-human hosts, we highlight the importance of these findings for our current understanding of cancer, before proposing a coordinated strategy to harvest biomedical information from non-human resources and translate it into a clinical setting. First, infectious cancers that can be transmitted as allografts between individual hosts, have been identified in four distinct, unrelated groups, dogs, Tasmanian devils, Syrian hamsters and, surprisingly, marine bivalves.

Biomechanical Responses and Injury Assessment of Post Mortem Human Subjects in Various Rear-facing Seating Configurations.

The objective of this study was to generate biomechanical corridors from post-mortem human subjects (PMHS) in two different seatback recline angles in 56 km/h sled tests simulating a rear-facing occupant during a frontal vehicle impact. PMHS were placed in a production seat which included an integrated seat belt. To achieve a repeatable configuration, the seat was rigidized in the rearward direction using a reinforcing frame that allowed for adjustability in both seatback recline angle and head restraint position.

How is obesity associated with happiness? Evidence from China.

Happiness is a universal goal that people pursue. Studies of the relationship between obesity and happiness have shown mixed findings. It is uncertain whether an optimum BMI level exists and at what level obesity interferes or interacts with happiness.

The effect of pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating peptide-38 and vasoactive intestinal peptide in cluster headache.

Background: Previously reported increases in serum levels of vasodilating neuropeptides pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating peptide-38 (PACAP38) and vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) during attacks of cluster headache could indicate their involvement in cluster headache attack initiation. We investigated the attack-inducing effects of PACAP38 and vasoactive intestinal peptide in cluster headache, hypothesising that PACAP38, but not vasoactive intestinal peptide, would induce cluster-like attacks in episodic active phase and chronic cluster headache patients.

Methods: In a double-blind crossover study, 14 episodic cluster headache patients in active phase, 15 episodic cluster headache patients in remission phase and 15 chronic cluster headache patients were randomly allocated to receive intravenous infusion of PACAP38 (10 pmol/kg/min) or vasoactive intestinal peptide (8 pmol/kg/min) over 20 min on two study days separated by at least 7 days.

Mental health and well-being in older women in China: implications from the Andersen model.

Background: Mental health and well-being among older women is an important topic due to the feminization of later life as women tend to have longer life expectancy resulting in elderly women being more advanced in age and outnumbering men. Older women generally play a key role in their families lifelong and mostly depend on social support from their family and close friends in older age to cope with any limitations they face as a result of age-related changes in their health and functional ability.

Methods: We examine which factors predict mental health and well-being in older women using the Third Wave of the 2010 Female Social Status Survey conducted by the All-China Women's Federation (n = 3527).

Future Interstate Highway System Demands: Predictions Based on Population Projections.

The Interstate Highway System (IHS) used to be a symbol of American growth and its economic machine, but the IHS has not been expanded much since its inception. Recently there are both executive and legislative desires to restore and upgrade the IHS to its role as a premier system that can meet the growing and changing demands of the twenty-first century. Demographic forecasting is a precursor to rational transportation planning and decision activities.

Incidence of male breast cancer in Scotland over a twenty-five-year period (1992-2017).

Male breast cancer (MBC) accounts for around 1% of all breast cancers diagnosed. There are inconsistent reports on the incidence of MBC which some propose may be rising. Here, for the first time, the incidence of MBC in Scotland over 25 years from 1992 to 2017 was examined through interrogating the Information Services Division Scotland database.

Cognitive Performance Among Older Persons in Japan and the United States.

Objective: To compare cognitive performance among Japanese and American persons, aged 68 years and older, using two nationally representative studies and to examine whether differences can be explained by differences in the distribution of risk factors or in their association with cognitive performance.

Design: Nationally representative studies with harmonized collection of data on cognitive functioning.

Setting: Nihon University Japanese Longitudinal Study of Aging and the US Health and Retirement Study.

The spectrum of cluster headache: A case report of 4600 attacks.

Introduction: Knowledge of the clinical features of cluster headache is mainly based on retrospective and cross-sectional studies. Here, we present a case of a chronic cluster headache patient who prospectively recorded timing and clinical features of all attacks for 6 years, aiming to describe the clinical spectrum and timing of cluster headache symptoms experienced and to identify daily and/or seasonal rhythmicity.

Methods: Registration of attack timing, duration, associated symptoms and severity was done prospectively on a smartphone application.

Cluster headache beyond the pain phase: A prospective study of 500 attacks.

Objective: To describe the nature, prevalence, and duration of symptoms in the preictal, ictal, and postictal phases of cluster headache (CH) attacks.

Methods: Fifty-seven patients with episodic or chronic CH participated in this prospective, observational study. In a questionnaire concerning 33 CH and migraine-related symptoms, patients reported the clinical features of up to 10 CH attacks/patient.

Change and Stability of Emotional Health of Rural Pennsylvania Youth During High School.

Purpose: Few prior studies have examined change in emotional health of high school students in a rural context. Considering the multifaceted nature of emotional health, this research aims to identify the patterns and explore change and stability of the emotional health of rural Pennsylvania youth. It also investigates the influence of family, peers, school, and the community environment on rural adolescents' emotional health.

Biomechanical Responses of PMHS Subjected to Abdominal Seatbelt Loading.

Past studies have found that a pressure based injury risk function was the best predictor of liver injuries due to blunt impacts. In an effort to expand upon these findings, this study investigated the biomechanical responses of the abdomen of post mortem human surrogates (PMHS) to high-speed seatbelt loading and developed external response targets in conjunction with proposing an abdominal injury criterion. A total of seven unembalmed PMHS, with an average mass and stature of 71 kg and 174 cm respectively were subjected to belt loading using a seatbelt pull mechanism, with the PMHS seated upright in a freeback configuration.
