Qualitative patient experiences from the Self-Blame and Perspective-Taking Intervention for eating disorders.

Background: Problems in social cognition and social support contribute to eating disorders (ED). Group therapy provides an ideal format to create an experiential learning environment focused on understanding social interactions. This pilot study examined the qualitative content of the participants' experiences in the Self-Blame and Perspective-Taking Intervention (SBPI) for ED.

Uracil-catalyzed synthesis of acetyl phosphate: a photochemical driver for protometabolism.

Progress toward a protometabolism (the earliest energy storage networks) has been severely hindered by a shortage of driver reactions, which could have harnessed solar photons or coupled electron sources/sinks on the primordial Earth. Here, it is reported for the first time that thioacetate can be converted into a known metabolite, acetyl phosphate, by ultraviolet light and in aqueous solution at neutral pH. Of more compelling importance, the synthesis is catalyzed by uracil, which suggests that a genetic component may have also facilitated the emergence of metabolic pathways.

Phosphate solubility and the cyanate-mediated synthesis of pyrophosphate.

The justification for a less alkaline primordial ocean (than present) is briefly reviewed, along with constraints on aqueous phosphate under such conditions. Based on the assumption that CaHPO(4) dihydrate determined the availability of phosphorus species, we have carried out laboratory simulations to determine equilibrium concentrations as a function of pH (in PIPES buffer) with added NaCl and CaCl(2). Consistent with expectations, solubility declines with higher pH and [CaCl(2)], but increases only slightly with [NaCl].

N-cyanoimidazole and diimidazole imine: water-soluble condensing agents for the formation of the phosphodiester bond.

The reaction of BrCN with imidazole results in the formation of N-cyanoimidazole and diimidazole imine. These compounds were shown to be useful condensing agents for the formation of the phosphodiester bound in aqueous solution.

The nasolabial musculocutaneous flap: clinical and anatomical correlations.

The location of the facial artery beneath the facial mimetic muscles of the nasolabial groove allows surgical development of a true musculocutaneous flap. This report of 20 surgical flaps and six cadaveric dissections highlights the nasolabial musculocutaneous flap with its direct muscle perforating arteries which nourish the overlying skin. The absence of any flap's ischemic failure emphasizes the durability of the flap for various midface and oral reconstructive situations.

Picket-fence porphyrins as potential phototherapeutic agents.

The synthetic "picket fence" porphyrin, tetra(o-acetamidophenyl)porphine (TAc), as a biological photosensitizer has been evaluated both in vitro and in vivo in mitochondria from the R3230AC mammary tumor. Studies in vitro, consisting of incubation of mitochondria with TAc at a concentration of 4.0 micrograms/ml followed by photolysis, result in the inhibition of cytochrome c oxidase, proton translocating ATPase, succinate dehydrogenase, and malate dehydrogenase.

Montmorillonite: a multifunctional mineral catalyst for the prebiological formation of phosphate esters.

Reaction of diiminosuccinonitrile (DISN) with 3'-AMP in the presence of alkali- and alkaline earth-montmorillonites results in the formation of 2',3'-cAMP in aqueous solution. Little or no 2', 3'-cAMP is produced when metal ion concentrations equivalent to that of the metal ion associated with the homoionic clays are used instead of mobntmorillionite. Yields comparable to those obtained with DISN are obtained when diaminomaleonitrile (DAMN) is used in place of DISN as the condensing agent.

Nevus sebaceus of Jadassohn: the head and neck manifestations.

The nevus sebaceus of Jadassohn (SNJ) is a congenitally-occurring, hamartomatous disorder of the skin and its adnexa of infrequent occurrence. This presentation of five cases emphasizes the smooth, waxy, yellow-brown lesion's progression into a thickened sebaceous tumor of premalignant predilection. The incidence of neoplastic degeneration of these hamartomatous nevi may be as high as 30% with the capacity of metastasis occasionally reported.

Nasolabial musculocutaneous flap in reconstruction of oral defects.

Modern day understanding of the microcirculation of musculocutaneous flaps has initiated this reconsideration of the nasolabial flap with the context of modern flap physiology and nomenclature. Surgical incorporation of the circumoral and facial muscles within the skin of the overlying nasolabial groove constitute a musculocutaneous flap based upon the underlying facial vessels. This thick musculocutaneous flap provides an extremely reliable vascularity for reconstruction of the floor of the mouth and oral sphincter in a one-stage procedure.

The adsorption and reaction of adenine nucleotides on montmorillonite.

The binding of AMP to Zn(2+)-montmorillonite was investigated in the presence of buffers and salts. Good's buffers, piperazine-N,N'-bis(2-ethanesulfonate) [PIPES] and morpholine-N-2-ethanesulfonate [MES], perturbed the exchangeable cations to a lesser extent (only 9% of Zn2+ displaced by 0.2 M buffer) than was observed with imidazole and lutidine buffers or NaCl and KCl salts (up to 80% of Zn2+ displaced).

The investigation of the HCN derivative diiminosuccinonitrile as a prebiotic condensing agent. The formation of phosphate esters.

Diiminosuccinonitrile (DISN) is formed readily by the Fe3+ oxidation of diaminomaleonitrile, a tetramer of HCN. DISN effects the phosphorylation of uridine in 13% yield to a mixture of the isomers of UMP when the reaction is performed in dimethylformamide solution. A 4% yield of the UMP isomers is obtained in neutral aqueous solution using 2 times the DISN concentration and 7 times the phosphate concentration used in DMF.

Diiminosuccinonitrile (DISN), formed by the oxidation of diaminomaleonitrile (DAMN), has been investigated as a potential prebiotic phosphorylating agent. DISN effects the cyclization of 3'-adenosine monophosphate to adenosine 2', 3'-cyclic phosphate in up to 39% yield. The mechanism of this reaction was investigated.

Pharyngoesophageal perforations after blunt trauma to the neck.

The neck with cartilaginous framework left intact still requires a high index of suspicion of a pharyngoesophageal perforation after blunt trauma. If the diagnosis is missed and/or prompt surgical drainage of the perforation is delayed, increased morbidity from deep neck abscesses and/or death may result. This is the first reported series of pharyngoesophageal perforations that follow blunt trauma.

Cystosarcoma phylloides of the breast: a new therapeutic proposal.

An analysis of forty cases of cystosarcoma phylloides of the breast was undertaken to clarify the relationship between histology, surgical treatment and prognosis of this fibroepithelial tumor. Thirty-eight female patients 12 to 85 years of age, treated for this diagnosis over a 17-year period, were studied retrospectively. Histologically malignant lesions were diagnosed in 17 cases: six were treated by local excision, one by subcutaneous mastectomy with prosthetic implant, four by simple mastectomy, three by modified, two by radical mastectomy, and one by biopsy only.
