Article Synopsis
  • - Hepatocyte-derived liver progenitor-like cells (HepLPCs) help improve liver recovery in animals with acute liver failure by detoxifying ammonia, enhancing liver regeneration, and reducing inflammation.
  • - Research on HepLPC-derived extracellular vesicles (HepLPC-EVs) revealed that these vesicles promote liver regeneration in mice and stimulate primary human hepatocyte growth through the microRNA miR-183-5p.
  • - The mechanism involves miR-183-5p downregulating the FoxO1 gene, which activates key signaling pathways (Akt/GSK3β/β-catenin) that facilitate liver restoration during acute liver failure.

Objectives: To explore the impact of hepatic steatosis measured by MRI-proton density fat fraction (MRI-PDFF) on liver stiffness measurement (LSM) value and its diagnostic performance for staging liver fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB).

Methods: A total of 914 patients with CHB who underwent liver biopsy and MRI-PDFF were retrospectively reviewed. The influence of MRI-PDFF on LSM value was assessed using univariate and multivariate linear analyses.

Two-dimensional (2D) ion crystals may represent a promising path to scale up qubit numbers for ion trap quantum information processing. However, to realize universal quantum computing in this system, individually addressed high-fidelity two-qubit entangling gates still remain challenging due to the inevitable micromotion of ions in a 2D crystal as well as the technical difficulty in 2D addressing. Here we demonstrate two-qubit entangling gates between any ion pairs in a 2D crystal of four ions.

Rationale And Objectives: Detection and diagnosis of architectural distortion (AD) on digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) is challenging. This study applied artificial intelligence (AI) using deep learning (DL) algorithms to detect AD, followed by radiomics for classification.

Materials And Methods: 500 cases with AD on DBT reports were identified; the earlier 292 cases for training, and the later 208 cases for testing.

Article Synopsis
  • CRISPR diagnostics face challenges like low signal efficiency and sensitivity due to their reliance on single-stranded nucleic acid fluorescent reporters.
  • The new CrisprAIE system combines CRISPR/Cas reactions with innovative aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) for more effective fluorescence and improved clinical detection of norovirus and SARS-CoV-2.
  • CrisprAIE shows a substantial increase in sensitivity—up to 270 times better—compared to traditional CRISPR diagnostics and has potential for broader application in improving detection methods across various CRISPR-based techniques.

Article Synopsis
  • Cervical artery dissection (CeAD) is a leading cause of ischemic strokes in young adults, and this study explored the effects of intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) on patients with CeAD and stroke symptoms.
  • Analyzed data from the STOP-CAD study, it found that IVT significantly improved functional independence after 90 days in patients without increasing the risk of symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage.
  • The results suggest that IVT is a beneficial treatment for eligible patients with CeAD, aligning with current medical guidelines on its use.

Purpose: To develop and test a radiomics nomogram based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and clinicopathological factors for predicting the axillary pathologic complete response (apCR) to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) in breast cancer patients with axillary lymph node (ALN) metastases.

Materials And Methods: A total of 319 patients who underwent MRI examination and received NAC treatment were enrolled from two centers, and the presence of ALN metastasis was confirmed by biopsy pathology before NAC. The radiomics features were extracted from regions of interest of ALNs before (pre-radiomics) and after (post-radiomics) NAC.

Article Synopsis
  • Coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) can help assess the difficulty of performing percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) in patients with chronic total occlusion (CTO) by analyzing plaque characteristics through radiomics.
  • The study involved 551 patients, and the developed radiomics model demonstrated a higher predictive ability for guidewire success than existing models, showing an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.86 in external testing.
  • The effectiveness of the radiomics model relies on factors like the presence of calcification, the location of the CTO, the involvement of adjacent branches, and the experience level of the operators performing the procedure.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2) continues to be a global threat due to its ability to evolve and generate new subvariants, leading to new waves of infection. Additionally, other coronaviruses like Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV, formerly known as hCoV-EMC), which first emerged in 2012, persist and continue to present a threat of severe illness to humans. The continued identification of novel coronaviruses, coupled with the potential for genetic recombination between different strains, raises the possibility of new coronavirus clades of global concern emerging.

The manipulation of cell surface receptors' activity will open a new frontier for drug development and disease treatment. However, limited by the desensitization of drugs, effective physical intervention strategy remains challenging. Here, the controllable internalization of transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) on neural cells by local piezoelectric field is reported.

Background: Stroke etiology could influence the outcomes in patients with basilar-artery occlusion (BAO). This study aimed to evaluate the differences in efficacy and safety of best medical treatment (BMT) plus endovascular treatment (EVT) versus BMT alone in acute BAO across different stroke etiologies.

Methods: The study was a post hoc analysis of the ATTENTION trial (Trial of Endovascular Treatment of Acute Basilar-Artery Occlusion), which was a multicenter, randomized trial at 36 centers in China from February 2021 to September 2022.

Objectives: To investigate the predictive value of coronary computed tomography angiography-derived fractional flow reserve (CT-FFR) before percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) to predict target vessel failure (TVF) after stent implantation.

Methods: This retrospective study included 429 patients (429 vessels) who underwent PCI and stent implantation after CCTA within 3 months. All patients underwent coronary stent implantation between January 2012 and December 2019.

Immune checkpoint inhibition targeting the PD-1/PD-L1 pathway has become a powerful clinical strategy for treating cancer, but its efficacy is complicated by various resistance mechanisms. One of the reasons for the resistance is the internalization and recycling of PD-L1 itself upon antibody binding. The inhibition of lysosome-mediated degradation of PD-L1 is critical for preserving the amount of PD-L1 recycling back to the cell membrane.

The discovery of Mn-Ca complex in photosystem II stimulates research of manganese-based catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, conventional chemical strategies face challenges in regulating the four electron-proton processes of OER. Herein, we investigate alpha-manganese dioxide (α-MnO) with typical Mn-O-Mn-HO motifs as a model for adjusting proton coupling.

Ethylene/α-olefin copolymers are produced in huge scale and widely used, but their after-use disposal has caused plastic pollution problems. Their chemical inertness made chemical re/upcycling difficult. Ideally, PE materials should be made de novo to have a circular closed-loop lifecycle.

Soft tissue sarcoma is a broad family of mesenchymal malignancies exhibiting remarkable histological diversity. We portray the proteomic landscape of 272 soft tissue sarcomas representing 12 major subtypes. Hierarchical classification finds the similarity of proteomic features between angiosarcoma and epithelial sarcoma, and elevated expression of SHC1 in AS and ES is correlated with poor prognosis.

Generating ion-photon entanglement is a crucial step for scalable trapped-ion quantum networks. To avoid the crosstalk on memory qubits carrying quantum information, it is common to use a different ion species for ion-photon entanglement generation such that the scattered photons are far off-resonant for the memory qubits. However, such a dual-species scheme can be subject to inefficient sympathetic cooling due to the mass mismatch of the ions.
