Background: Mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNA-CN) is associated with the severity and mortality in patients with stroke, but the associations in different stroke subtypes remain unexplored.
Methods: We conducted an observational prospective cohort analysis on patients with ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack enrolled in the Third China National Stroke Registry. We applied logistic models to assess the association of mtDNA-CN with functional outcome (modified Rankin Scale score, 3-6 versus 0-2) and Cox proportional hazard models to assess the association with stroke recurrence (treating mortality as a competing risk) and mortality during a 12-month follow-up, adjusting for sex, age, physical activity, National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale at admission, history of stroke and peripheral artery disease, small artery occlusion, and interleukin-6.
Urine-based testing is promising for noninvasive diagnosis of urothelial carcinoma (UC) but has suboptimal sensitivity for early-stage tumors. Herein, we developed a multitarget urine tumor DNA test, UI-Seek, for UC detection and evaluated its clinical feasibility. Background: Despite the growing needs in nondialytic alternatives for conservative kidney management, few studies have examined the management of anemia in palliative care (PC) outpatient clinics, which represent the key point of entry for timely access to PC.
Objective: A retrospective study to review for a patient-centered approach in anemia management and symptom control.
Results: Over the study period from July 2020 to March 2023, a total of 158 patients were seen at our renal PC clinic, 47 were included in data analysis.
Unbiased metagenomic sequencing is conceptually well-suited for first-line diagnosis as all known and unknown infectious entities can be detected, but costs, turnaround time and human background reads in complex biofluids, such as plasma, hinder widespread deployment. Separate preparations of DNA and RNA also increases costs. Background: Exposure to chronic psychological stress is a risk factor for metabolic cardiovascular disease. Given the important role of lysosomal CTSS (cathepsin S) in human pathobiology, we examined the role of CTSS in stress-related thrombosis, focusing on inflammation, oxidative stress, and apoptosis.
Methods: Six-week-old wild-type mice (CTSS) and CTSS-deficient mice (CTSS) randomly assigned to nonstress and 2-week immobilization stress groups underwent iron chloride3 (FeCl)-induced carotid thrombosis surgery for morphological and biochemical studies.
Background: We assessed the safety and immunogenicity of a core-shell structured lipopolyplex (LPP) based COVID-19 mRNA vaccine, SW-BIC-213, as a heterologous booster in healthy adults.
Methods: We conducted an open-labeled, two-centered, and three-arm randomised phase 1 trial. Healthy adults, who had completed a two-dose of inactivated COVID-19 vaccine for more than six months, were enrolled and randomized to receive a booster dose of COVILO (inactivated vaccine) (n = 20) or SW-BIC-213-25μg (n = 20), or SW-BIC-213-45μg (n = 20).

By comparing adult mouse skeletal muscle fibers, isolated either by mechanical dissection or by collagenase-induced ECM digestion, we investigated acute effects of ECM disruption on cellular and mitochondrial morphology, transcriptomic signatures, and Ca handling. RNA-sequencing showed striking differences in gene expression patterns between the two isolation methods with enzymatically dissociated fibers resembling myopathic phenotypes.
