In our efforts to investigate the coordination architectures of transition metals and organic ligands with tailored structures, we have prepared two structurally related rigid bulky acridine-based ligands, 9-[3-(2-pyridyl)pyrazol-1-yl]- acridine (L(1)) and 9-(1-imidazolyl)acridine (L2), and synthesized and characterized four of their Ag(I) complexes, {[AgL1](ClO4)}2 (1), {[AgL1](NO3)}2 (2), [AgL2(2)](ClO4) (3), and {[(Ag3L2(3))(NO3)](NO3)2(H2O)}(infinity) (4). The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis shows that the structures of 1 and 2 are similar to each other, with the two intramolecular Ag(I) centers of each complex being encircled by two L1 ligands; this forms a unique boxlike cyclic dimer, which is further linked to form one-dimensional (1D) chains of 1 and a two-dimensional (2D) network of 2 by intermolecular face-to-face pi..

The synemin gene encodes proteins belonging to the intermediate filament family. These proteins confer resistance to mechanical stress and modulate cell shape. Three synemin isoforms, of 180 (H), 150 (M) and 41 (L) kDa, are produced by alternative splicing of the pre-mRNA and are regulated differently during development.

Evodiamine and rutecarpine are two kinds of indole alkaloids contained in the fruit of Evodiae fructus, which have been shown to exhibit various bioactivities in humans. A liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometric method (LC-MS/MS) was developed for the determination of evodiamine and rutecarpine in human serum. The serum was extracted by solid-phase extraction (SPE) and analyzed using a C18 column and a mobile phase consisting of methanol-water (85:15) solution containing 5 mmol/L ammonium formate at a flow rate of 0.

We demonstrate single qubit density matrix tomography in a single semiconductor quantum dot system through consecutive phase sensitive rotations of the qubit via ultrafast coherent optical excitations. The result is important for quantifying gate operations in quantum information processing in the quantum dot systems as well as demonstrating consecutive arbitrary qubit rotations.

We report on the coherent optical excitation of electron spin polarization in the ground state of charged GaAs quantum dots via an intermediate charged exciton (trion) state. Coherent optical fields are used for the creation and detection of the Raman spin coherence between the spin ground states of the charged quantum dot. The measured spin decoherence time, which is likely limited by the nature of the spin ensemble, approaches 10 ns at zero field.

Hmong-Mien (H-M) is a major language family in East Asia, and its speakers distribute primarily in southern China and Southeast Asia. To date, genetic studies on H-M speaking populations are virtually absent in the literature. In this report, we present the results of an analysis of genetic variations in the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) hypervariable segment 1 (HVS1) region and diagnostic variants in the coding regions in 537 individuals sampled from 17 H-M populations across East Asia.

We have previously cloned and characterized the human synemin gene, which encodes two intermediate filament proteins (IFPs). We now show that the mouse synemin gene encodes three different synemin isoforms through an alternative splicing mechanism. Two of them, synemin H and M are similar to human alpha and beta synemin, and the third isoform, L synemin, constitutes a new form of IFP.

Aim: To explore the protective effects of melatonin (Mel) on the abnormal phosphorylation of neuronal cytoskeletal proteins.

Methods: We generated a neuroblastoma (SH-SY5Y) cell system in which cytoskeletal proteins are abnormally phosphorylated resulting in microtubule disruption due to the marked inhibition of protein phosphatase activities by okadaic acid (OA).

Results: OA-induced declines in cell viability and mitochondrial metabolic activity were remarkably prevented by Mel.

A liquid chromatographic-electrospray mass spectrometric method was developed for the determination of ginkgolides and bilobalide and was applied to the analysis of commercial products of Ginkgo biloba leaf extracts. Adducts of these compounds with ammonium, proton and sodium were detected and their relative abundance depended on the electrospray fragmentor voltage. The relative standard deviation (RSD) was improved from > 17% to < 6%, when three adduct ions of (M + H)+, (M + NH4)+ and (M + Na)+ were used for quantification compared with single ion monitoring.

The valence electronic structures of [Cu(hfac)L] (hfac = CF(3)C(O)CHC(O)CF(3); L = PMe(3), CNMe), [Ag(hfac)(PMe(3))], and [Ag(fod)(PEt(3))] (fod = t-BuC(O)CHC(O)C(3)F(7)) have been studied by recording their photoelectron spectra and by performing Xalpha-SW calculations on the model compounds [M(dfm)(PH(3))] (dfm = HC(O)CHC(O)H; M = Cu, Ag) and [Cu(dfm)(CNH)]. For the copper complexes, the spectra were recorded between 21 and 160 eV using He I, He II and synchrotron radiation; while, for the silver complexes, He I and He II, spectra were recorded. Assignments were made by comparison of experimental and calculated values of band energies, and, for the copper complexes, by similar comparison of experimental and theoretical branching ratios as a function of photon energy.

Identification of cell surface viral binding proteins is important for understanding viral attachment and internalization. We have fused the pre-S domain of the duck hepatitis B virus (DHBV) large envelope protein to glutathione S-transferase and demonstrated a 170-kDa binding protein (p170) in [35S]methionine-labeled duck hepatocyte lysates. This glycoprotein was found abundantly in all extrahepatic tissues infectible with DHBV and in some noninfectible tissues, though it is not secreted into the blood.
