Evaluating genetic counseling session duration: A scoping review of patient care time, influencing factors, and impact on patient outcomes.

One key element of evaluating the quality of a genetic counseling session is the measurement of its efficiency, yet limited research exists on how the genetic counseling process relates to time and which elements contribute to improved quality of care. A scoping review was undertaken to document studies that have reported genetic counseling patient care time and provide a landscape of the average patient care time, which factors impact patient care time, and how patient care time relates to experiences and outcomes. Twenty-five studies met criteria and were included.

Engaging communities: A scoping literature review of community-based participatory research in genetics service delivery settings.

Genetic counseling (GC) services have the potential to improve health outcomes, yet there are documented disparities in the use of GC services among minoritized racial/ethnic populations. Community-based participatory research (CBPR) is an approach to integrate diverse patient perspectives to improve GC services. The objective of this review was to assess the current state of international CBPR within GC and genetics services from 2006 to 2023.

Linking genetic counseling communication skills to patient outcomes and experiences using a community-engagement and provider-engagement approach: research protocol for the GC-PRO mixed methods sequential explanatory study.

Introduction: In over 50 years since the genetic counseling (GC) profession began, a systematic study of GC communication skills and patient-reported outcomes in actual sessions across multiple clinical specialties has never been conducted. To optimize GC quality and improve efficiency of care, the field must first be able to comprehensively measure GC skills and determine which skills are most critical to achieving positive patient experiences and outcomes. This study aims to characterise GC communication skills using a novel and pragmatic measure and link variations in communication skills to patient-reported outcomes, across clinical specialties and with patients from diverse backgrounds in the USA.

Inconvenient sampling: Community-engaged and restorative justice approaches to genetic counseling student research.

Genetic counseling research requires a comprehensive approach since it frequently serves as the foundation for clinical care practice. Genetic counseling students play a pivotal role in advancing the profession, as they contribute a significant proportion of the research conducted within the genetic counseling community. However, a prevailing trend of convenience sampling of genetic counselors has limited the diversity of perspectives in student research projects.

Exploring genetic counselors' experiences with non-paternity in clinical settings.

Non-paternity (NP) is a challenging dilemma faced by genetics providers and there is little consensus on whether this finding should be disclosed. Discussions in the literature are highly theoretical, with limited research regarding how disclosure decisions are enacted in practice. We explored genetic counselors' (GCs) clinical experiences with NP to understand if, how, and why this finding is communicated.
