Autophagy induction in cancer is involved in cancer progression and the acquisition of resistance to anticancer agents. Therefore, autophagy is considered a potential therapeutic target in cancer therapy. In this study, we found that long-chain fatty acids (LCFAs) have inhibitory effects on Atg4B, which is essential for autophagosome formation, through screening based on the pharmacophore of 21f, a recently developed Atg4B inhibitor.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and other viral infections are possible triggers of autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). To analyze the causative relationship between EBV infections and RA development, we performed experiment on humanized NOD/Shi-scid/IL-2RγC (hu-NOG) mice reconstituted human immune system components and infected with EBV. In EBV-infected hu-NOG mice, breakdown of knee joint bones was found to be accompanied by the accumulation of receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) (RANK) ligand (RANKL), a key factor in osteoclastogenesis, human CD19 and EBV-encoded small RNA (EBER)-bearing cells.

Background: This study aimed to assess anxiety, depression and quality of life (QoL) in patients with head and neck cancer undergoing laryngectomy using comprehensive self-reported questionnaires for a period of up to 5 years.

Methods: This prospective observational study enrolled 150 consecutive patients with locally advanced head and neck cancer who underwent laryngectomy at Nagoya University Hospital between 2007 and 2020. Anxiety, depression and QoL were assessed at baseline (preoperative) and at 3, 6, 12, 24, 36, 48 and 60 months after surgery using two brief self-reported questionnaires, such as the eight-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-8) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS).

Background: Little is known whether sublingual immunotherapy using Japanese cedar pollen extract (cedar SLIT) is effective for not only Japanese cedar pollinosis but also Japanese cypress pollinosis. We investigated the prevalence rate of Japanese cypress pollinosis, efficacy of cedar SLIT on cypress pollinosis and patients' wish to receive cypress SLIT.

Methods: We investigated a multi-center (31 institutions), cross-sectional survey using a self-administrated questionnaire with four questions for patients received cedar SLIT aged from 5 to 69 years old.
