Introduction: Preoperative estimations of blood loss are important when planning surgery for cervical spine injuries in older adults. The association between ankylosis and blood loss in perioperative management is of particular interest. This multicenter database review aimed to evaluate the impact of ankylosis on surgical blood loss volume in elderly patients with cervical spine injury.

Article Synopsis
  • After surgery for intradural lesions, it's crucial to reconstruct the dura effectively to prevent serious complications like cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage.
  • This study compares the effectiveness of two materials—fibrin-coated porous collagen matrix and fibrin-coated polyglycolic acid (PGA) sheets—in preventing CSF leakage during spinal surgery.
  • Results showed that the porous collagen matrix significantly reduced the occurrence of CSF leakage (0%) compared to the PGA sheet group (5%), highlighting its potential superiority in surgical applications.

Article Synopsis
  • Microscopic examination is a key method for identifying crude drugs but is time-intensive and requires skilled techniques.
  • High-resolution X-ray computed tomography (HRXCT) is a new method that shows promise for visualizing the internal structure of small herbal products with less technical skill required.
  • In this study, HRXCT effectively illustrated the internal structures of Artemisia Capillaris Flower and Plantago Seed, proving to be a simpler and more efficient alternative to traditional microscopic examination.

While biological disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (bDMARDs) are considered beneficial for preventing osteoporosis and bone fracture, it is unclear whether bone loss is involved in the development of vertebral fracture, and few reports have examined the factors related to vertebral fracture in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients using bDMARDs. This study aims to identify factors influencing vertebral fracture in RA patients treated with bDMARDs. We retrospectively examined the records of 129 RA patients treated with bDMARDs for over 5 years.
