Prediction of CYP-mediated silybin A-losartan pharmacokinetic interactions using physiological based pharmacokinetic modeling.

The concomitant use of herbal products and synthetic drugs necessitates the assessment of their interaction potentials. The herbal hepatoprotective medicine, silybin A inhibits cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2C9 and 3A4 enzymes, thus, may interact with the drugs that are substrates of CYP2C9 and 3A4, such as losartan. The three most prominent genotypes, expressed by CYP2C9 are the CYP2C9*1/*1, CYP2C9*1/*2 and CYP2C9*1/*3.

Biomechanical evaluation of fixation properties of fibrin glue for ventral incisional hernia repair.

Introduction: Use of adhesives for mesh fixation in hernia is increasing. There has been minimal study of mesh incorporation and interface strength with adhesive fixation for ventral hernia repair. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the fixation properties of fibrin glue as it compared to suture fixation of mesh in an onlay position.

Cohesive zone modeling of mode I tearing in thin soft materials.

The use of modeling and simulation is growing rapidly in applications such as surgery simulations, injury mechanics and tissue engineering. The aim of this study is to model and simulate tissue tearing and the resulting failure for use in such applications. In particular, our goal is to characterize the mechanics of mode I tearing in thin soft materials.

Acute viral myocarditis: role of immunosuppression: a prospective randomised study.

Objective: To conduct a prospective randomised study to show the efficacy of immune suppression with prednisolone, administered at the 3-month duration of acute myocarditis.

Methods: The diagnosis of acute viral myocarditis was made based on echocardiography and serum viral antibodies. The inclusion criterion was acute myocarditis of 3 months duration.

Severe mitral stenosis with atrial fibrillation--a harbinger of thromboembolism.

Objective: To determine the frequency of Left Atrial thrombus in patients suffering from severe mitral stenosis with atrial fibrillation.

Methods: A cross sectional descriptive type study was conducted in the Echocardiography department of the National Institute of Cardio Vascular Diseases (NICVD) Karachi from October 1, 2007 to March 17, 2008. A total of 100 consecutive adult patients with severe Mitral stenosis (MS) and Atrial Fibrillation (AF) were included in this study.
