Interpersonal trauma and animal-related experiences in female and male military veterans: implications for program development.

Exposure to trauma is more frequent than was previously recognized. The prevalence and impact of trauma events, including trauma involving animals, was assessed in age-matched male and female veterans. High rates of exposure to at least one trauma event were reported by males (95%) and females (97%).

Management of myasthenia gravis by extended thymectomy with anterior mediastinal dissection.

Background: Thymectomy has continued to gain acceptance as definitive treatment for myasthenia gravis. Because of the nature of thymic embryology with scattered rests throughout the anterior mediastinum, we advocate a transsternal thymectomy with extended anterior mediastinal dissection.

Methods: A series of 48 patients with myasthenia gravis treated by thymectomy between 1979 and 1991 were reviewed.

Plasma exchange and prednisone in Guillain-Barré syndrome: a controlled randomized trial.

A controlled randomized trial of plasma exchange combined with prednisone was compared with supportive care alone in patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). There was no significant improvement in the treated group over the controls. The sample size, albeit small (12 treated and 13 controls), had the power (95% chance) to detect a change of 2 British Medical Research Council grades of strength between the groups.

Plasma exchange and prednisone in acute inflammatory polyradiculoneuropathy: a controlled randomized trial.

A controlled-randomized trial of plasma exchange combined with prednisone was compared to supportive care alone in patients with acute inflammatory polyradiculoneuropathy (AIP). The design of this study differs from other reported trials of plasma exchange in AIP because prednisone was used in the treatment group to prevent the possibility of antibody rebound. Furthermore, in this study, detailed muscle strength testing formed the principal basis for assessment of therapeutic efficacy while in the British, North American, and French studies, a functional assessment scale was used.

Psychotic-like reaction to procaine penicillin G.

A patient developed a psychotic-like reaction immediately after receiving an intramuscular injection of procaine penicillin G. The patient complained of a metallic taste, dizziness, ringing of the ears, and the fear of imminent death. No cardiovascular or pulmonary disturbances were noted.
