Sequence length polymorphisms within primate amelogenin and amelogenin-like genes: usefulness in sex determination.

Sequence length polymorphisms between the amelogenin (AMELX) and the amelogenin-like (AMELY) genes both within and between several mammalian species have been identified and utilized for sex determination, species identification, and to elucidate evolutionary relationships. Sex determination via polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays of the AMELX and AMELY genes has been successful in greater apes, prosimians, and two species of old world monkeys. To date, no sex determination PCR assay using AMELX and AMELY has been developed for new world monkeys.

Introduction: Hyperbaria-induced diuresis is accompanied by decreased basal and stimulated release of arginine vasopressin (AVP) and decreased blood volume possibly contributing to the reported orthostatic intolerance. Since hyperosmolality is not a consistent finding, the explanation of blood volume reduction at hyperbaria must involve an osmotic component to the diuresis. Investigations of a possible involvement of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) to the hyperbaric diuresis have revealed mixed results.

Scope and design of the GUSI international research program.

During the 1980s a large new simulated underwater saturation diving system was constructed at GKSS, Geesthacht, Germany. This German Underwater Simulator (GUSI) has performed over 18 trimix (helium, 5% nitrogen, oxygen) dives with 115 divers at depths to 600 m, including 9 to 450 m or deeper for a total of 2672 man-days of saturation and 994 days of welding and other work. From October 1989, an international research program was initiated to permit scientists from other countries to carry out physiologic and medical research during these working dives.
