Deep Photometric Stereo Networks for Determining Surface Normal and Reflectances.

This article presents a photometric stereo method based on deep learning. One of the major difficulties in photometric stereo is designing an appropriate reflectance model that is both capable of representing real-world reflectances and computationally tractable for deriving surface normal. Unlike previous photometric stereo methods that rely on a simplified parametric image formation model, such as the Lambert's model, the proposed method aims at establishing a flexible mapping between complex reflectance observations and surface normal using a deep neural network.

Wind loads on open truss structures: applications of blockage to historic transporter bridges.

The overall aim of this study is to compare and contrast the design of the two remaining working examples of early twentieth-century transporter bridges in the UK, namely, those at Newport and Middlesbrough. With the aid of modern finite-element analysis, the behaviour of the structures under loading is investigated, likely modes of failure determined and the efficiency of each structure evaluated. The important horizontal load component due to wind at the exposed locations of the bridges is examined using 'current blockage', ideas transferred from recent work on wave-current-structure interaction for space-frame structures in offshore engineering.

Decadal variability of extreme wave height representing storm severity in the northeast Atlantic and North Sea since the foundation of the Royal Society.

Long-term estimation of extreme wave height remains a key challenge because of the short duration of available wave data, and also because of the possible impact of climate variability on ocean waves. Here, we analyse storm-based statistics to obtain estimates of extreme wave height at locations in the northeast Atlantic and North Sea using the NORA10 wave hindcast (1958-2011), and use a 5 year sliding window to examine temporal variability. The decadal variability is correlated to the North Atlantic oscillation and other atmospheric modes, using a six-term predictor model incorporating the climate indices and their Hilbert transforms.

Dissociative Experiences and Psychopathology Among Inmates in Italian and Portuguese Prisons.

The association between dissociation and psychopathological symptoms is well established, yet studies with inmates are lacking. If higher rates of dissociation and psychiatric symptoms are reported in inmate samples, it is not clear whether they represent two separate, albeit related, characteristics. We examined the association between dissociation and psychopathological symptoms among 320 Italian subjects (122 inmates and 198 community participants) and a Portuguese inmate sample ( n = 67).

Mediastinal fibrosis and positive antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies: coincidence or common etiology?

Retroperitoneal fibrosis (RPF) with positive antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA) has been reported in several cases. We herein present the case of a 52-year-old woman who was diagnosed with mediastinal fibrosis (MF) on a thoracoscopic surgical biopsy. The patient had positive myeloperoxidase ANCA and thereafter developed crescentic glomerulonephritis, which was considered to be a form of ANCA-related nephritis.
