Around the world, tabloid newspapers are routinely surrounded by a moral and cultural panic. They are criticised for lowering standards of journalism and privileging sensation above substance, diverting readers from serious news to entertainment, or foregoing ethical principles. However, scholarship about tabloids have also highlighted the ways in which these papers are frequently better attuned to their readers' everyday lived experience.

Background & Aims: Restoring hepatic and peripheral insulin sensitivity is critical to prevent or reverse metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. Glucose homeostasis comprises in part the complex regulation of hepatic glucose production and insulin-mediated glucose uptake and oxidation in peripheral tissues. We previously identified hepatocyte arginase 2 (Arg2) as an inducible ureahydrolase that improves glucose homeostasis and enhances glucose oxidation in multiple obese, insulin-resistant models.

High UV damage and low repair, but not cytosine deamination, stimulate mutation hotspots at ETS binding sites in melanoma.

Noncoding mutation hotspots have been identified in melanoma and many of them occur at the binding sites of E26 transformation-specific (ETS) proteins; however, their formation mechanism and functional impacts are not fully understood. Here, we used UV (Ultraviolet) damage sequencing data and analyzed cyclobutane pyrimidine dimer (CPD) formation, DNA repair, and CPD deamination in human cells at single-nucleotide resolution. Our data show prominent CPD hotspots immediately after UV irradiation at ETS binding sites, particularly at sites with a conserved TTCCGG motif, which correlate with mutation hotspots identified in cutaneous melanoma.
