Impact of a lead glass screen on scatter radiation to eyes and hands in interventional cardiologists.

The objective of this study was to assess the impact of a transparent lead glass screen (TLGS) on scatter radiation to the eyes and the hands in interventional cardiologists and to compare the results to the recommended annual threshold values of 150 and 500 mSv, respectively. Local radiation doses to the left eye and the ring finger of the left hand of three operators (A, B, C) were assessed by thermoluminiscence dosimeters during 813 coronary angiographies (CAs), including 190 ad hoc percutaneous coronary interventions (PCIs) either with a TLGS placed between patient and operator [615 CAs including 138 ad hoc PCIs; dose-area product (DAP) = 84.9 +/- 71.

Procedural complications following diagnostic coronary angiography are related to the operator's experience and the catheter size.

Cardiac catheterization is performed routinely in hospitals all around the world. Extensive analysis of complications has been performed in the 1980s and early 1990s. However, because of the new therapeutic innovations based on advanced catheter technologies, these data may not apply to the present situation.

[Perioperative myocardial infarction and cardiac complications after noncardiac surgery in patients with prior myocardial infarction. II: Perioperative long-term ECG--clinical relevance practicability].

Unlabelled: Perioperative, mostly silent ischaemia in patients with coronary heart disease is difficult to detect by clinical examinations.

Methods: During the clinical evaluation (part I of this study) we monitored patients with prior myocardial infarction (MI) by continuous electrocardiographic (ECG) recording from the evening before until the first 24 h after operation. Excluded from Holter ECG studies were patients with a bundle branch block, pacemaker, valvular heart disease, cardiomyopathy, severe hypokalaemia, and digitalis treatment.

[Atrioventricular block in Lyme carditis].

Lyme disease, due to infection with Borrelia burgdorferi transmitted by ticks, is most frequently manifested by arthritis and neurological complications. In approximately 8% of cases, however, carditis, usually reflected in AV block, is the leading symptom. The case histories of 2 males and 1 female aged 23 to 37 years with AV block caused by Borrelia burgdorferi are presented.

[The clinical significance of ECG exercise testing at hospital discharge of patients with acute myocardial infarction].

330 patients were admitted to the intensive care unit of our hospital from January 1985 to December 1986. 141 of the 150 patients aged below 65 years underwent symptom-limited maximal exercise testing on a bicycle ergometer before discharge. No severe complications were noted.
