A cryopreservation protocol has been developed for embryogenic cultures (ECs) of Castanea mollissima, an important economic species of the Castanea genus in China. We achieved 100 % regrowth when ECs were treated with Plant Vitrification Solution 2 (PVS2) for 30, 60 and 90 min on ice. Optimal PVS2 treatment for cryopreservation was determined to be 30 min on ice based on the highest biomass regrowth after thawing.
