Computer assisted analysis of the microvasculature in metastasized and nonmetastasized squamous cell carcinomas of the tongue.

Background: Quantification of microvessels in solid malignancies is regarded as a potential test to predict their clinicobiologic behavior. However, discordant results have been reported for head and neck cancer that may be explained by varying methods.

Methods: In this retrospective study, we therefore quantified the microvasculature in 20 nonmetastasized and 20 metastasized squamous cell carcinomas of the tongue, using recently developed methods.

[Syndromes 7. Hypertelorism (Greig syndrome)].

Hypertelorism is an increased distance between the orbits. Most evident symptom is the increased intercanthal distance. It can be caused by congenital deformities (facial clefts, encephaloceles, enlarged ethmoïds) and by trauma.

[Syndromes 11. Treacher collins syndrome].

Treacher Collins syndrome is seen once in 10.000 births. Inheritance is autosomal dominant with variable expressivity.

[Syndromes 9. Hemifacial microsomia].

Hemifacial microsomia is also known under quite a number of synonyms. Pathognomonic for these usually sporadic cases are: marked three dimensional asymmetry of the mandible, the ear, the maxilla, the zygoma and the orbit. The more distal the structure, the more marked the asymmetry.

[Syndromes 2. Pfeiffer syndrome].

Acrocephalosyndactylias are syndromes characterized by abnormalities of the head (craniosynostosis), the face (hypertelorism, retromaxillism), hands and feet (cutaneous or bony syndactyly). Inheritance is autosomal dominant, but spontaneous cases are described also. The group is divided into several syndromes with varying penetrance and expressivity.
