Purpose: Mechanical stress on the ocular surface, such as from eye-rubbing, has been reported to lead to inflammation and various ocular conditions. We hypothesized that the mechanosensitive Piezo1 channel in the conjunctival epithelium contributes to the inflammatory response at the ocular surface after receiving mechanical stimuli.

Methods: Human conjunctival epithelial cells (HConjECs) were treated with Yoda1, a Piezo1-specific agonist, and various allergens to measure cytokine expression levels using qRT-PCR.

A 37-year-old, never-smoker, pregnant woman diagnosed with Graves' disease who had stable thyroid eye disease (TED) before pregnancy presented with aggravated proptosis and eyelid swelling at 13 weeks of pregnancy. Despite the administration of local triamcinolone and 3 cycles of corticosteroid pulse therapy from 25 to 28 weeks, the patient's visual acuity decline necessitated postpartum orbital decompression surgery. Although TSH receptor antibody (TRAb) levels decreased during the mid- to late term of pregnancy, the TED worsened.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed the changes in interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) among patients who had subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) from aneurysm rupture and looked at factors affecting outcomes and cerebral vasospasm.
  • It included 57 patients (16 men, 41 women), with varying degrees of SAH severity, all of whom underwent surgical clipping and had daily CSF samples collected post-surgery.
  • Results showed that lower postoperative IL-6 levels were linked to better outcomes, and use of artificial CSF during surgery reduced the incidence of cerebral vasospasm, suggesting its potential benefits in SAH management.

Deficit of oxygen and nutrients in the tumor microenvironment (TME) triggers abnormal angiogenesis that produces dysfunctional and leaky blood vessels, which fail to adequately perfuse tumor tissues. Resulting hypoxia, exacerbation of metabolic disturbances, and generation of an immunosuppressive TME undermine the efficacy of anticancer therapies. Use of carefully scheduled angiogenesis inhibitors has been suggested to overcome these problems and normalize the TME.

Purpose: To investigate the surgical outcomes of intrascleral intraocular lens (IOL) fixation using a modified extraocular forceps-guided technique.

Study Design: Retrospective case series.

Methods: Overall, 81 eyes of 78 patients who underwent intrascleral IOL fixation using the modified extraocular forceps-guided technique were included.
