High aspartate to alanine aminotransferase ratio is an indicator of cirrhosis and poor outcome in patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis.

Objectives: A liver biopsy is performed mainly to stage primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). In viral hepatitis, alcoholic liver disease and in primary biliary cirrhosis, the ratio of aspartate to alanine aminotransferase (AST/ALT) has been proven to be an indicator of liver cirrhosis. We wanted to test whether or not an AST/ALT ratio >/=1 is an indicator of cirrhosis also in patients with PSC.

The aim of the study was to examine the effects of selective thrombin inhibition with melagatran on renal hemodynamics and function, and liver integrity, during early endotoxemia. Endotoxemia was induced in thiobutabarbital-anesthetized rats by an intravenous bolus dose of lipopolysaccharide (LPS; 6 mg/kg).

Clinical characteristics and prognostic markers in disulfiram-induced liver injury.

Background/aims: Limited systematic data exists on the incidence of drug-induced hepatotoxicity due to disulfiram and the most important prognostic markers. We aimed to determine the nature and frequency of suspected disulfiram hepatotoxicity in Sweden.

Methods: All reports of suspected hepatic adverse drug reactions (ADR) associated with disulfiram received by the Swedish Adverse Drug Reactions Advisory Committee (SADRAC) 1966-2002 were reviewed.

Some life-style factors and the risk of invasive epithelial ovarian cancer in Swedish women.

The objective of this nationwide case-control study was to examine body mass index (BMI), alcohol use, coffee consumption, cigarette smoking, and leisure-time physical activity in relation to epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) risk. Subjects were 655 newly diagnosed EOC cases and 3899 population controls, all 50-74 years of age at recruitment between 1993 and 1995. Data were collected through mailed questionnaires.

Abdominal malignancies in patients with Wilson's disease.

Background: Wilson's disease is associated with heavy copper overload, primarily in the liver. Copper is a toxic metal, and might be expected to be associated with cancer induction, as iron is in haemochromatosis. However, liver cancer is currently believed to be extremely rare in this disease, and other intra-abdominal malignancies have not been reported.
